We have chosen to focus our efforts on easier and/or free access to tools and supplies for students and faculty. The need to better equip our students and faculty. Tools and supplies such as but are not limited to chargers, textbooks, notebooks, laptops and USB cables. Baruch College is situated in the middle of the bustling city yet we are unable to have easy access to simple supplies, especially electronics. There should be improvements and additions to current supplies and longer terms of rental for electronics.A primary problem that students face are missing or needing supplies when there are not enough supplies or the terms of use are too short. Some students will be lucky enough that their laptop rental would be long enough just for one class but then are forces to come back to renew their rental every few hours. Certain supplies are considered the bane of the existence of student and faculty alike where it is overpriced and is rarely used fully; textbooks. If supplies such as textbooks were to be made free or perhaps given in PDF format it would result in an almost guaranteed happier students and faculty. This would not only help students and faculty in having enough supplies to use but also contribute in improving their daily college lives.  Everyone would then have a slightly happier day at Baruch. Who doesn’t want that outcome?

A strong contender was a cheaper form of transportation. Possible solutions would have been free monthly metro cards for ongoing students, a shuttle bus for Baruch students, a direct underground subway stop for Baruch College and more/better elevators within campus buildings. However, in order to have any concrete solutions to solve or alleviate this problem, this would require more influence and power than what Baruch possesses. We would be requesting help from the city itself and the government to add more transportation options.

Stakeholder: Library Personnel

Business Research

Primary

  • At the library, there are severely long lines at renting stations for electronics and books. Most students would end up without the book or laptop that they need for class or work. If they do succeed in retrieving the book or laptop they need, they now face short rental terms and long lines somewhere else such as printers.
  • There are many supplies that are left behind in the library, cables, USBs, books. Some return to pick up their supplies but other leave it behind. There is occasionally an overflow of students in the library where there will not be an available computer to use.

Secondary

  • Overflow of electronic rentals could be counter-intuitive and be harmful to students
    http://www.nytimes.com/2007/05/04/education/04laptop.html?pagewanted=all
  • Lack of supplies will cause more stress within students especially during class
  • Too many laptop rentals would make the library computer lab less useful.
  • Having supplies to hand out to students would result in increased traffic within helpdesk and other areas
  • More students will be able to use tools and supplies that they previously could not use
  • Students will be more prepared for classes if there are more supplies to take or rent

Stakeholders: Service Providers

Primary Research

  • Interview of the Technology Desk on the Second Floor of the Library
    • There is a greater need for Apple products daily than any other product.
    • The laptop kiosk does not do enough to relieve pressure from laptop service due to battery life issues and no charger loan with the unit.
    • Students need to follow rules of the Technology Desk in order for them to efficiently help students.

The demand for laptop rentals are high compared to what they can loan.

  • On-Site Visit to the 6th Floor Computer Lab of the Library
    • Need for more computers.
    • Need for a greater number of staff that are capable of handling troubleshooting issues with the software/hardware.
    • Computers with Adobe and other design tools are limited to about 20 computers. Other computers capable of designing and editing are in labs that have limited hours.
    • Bigger areas where group projects can be done.

The main constraint of the 6th Floor Computer lab is the budget.

THE CHOSEN ONE

Our need was originally to full equip faculty & students. Out of the top 10 solutions, we chose a parking cone that will designate parking spaces for student & staff that drive to Baruch. We feel that driving is more reliable than public transportation, but when it comes it parking it can be just as much of a hassle. These cones will aid in decreasing tardiness to class or work at the school. We chose the colors blue & white to embody Baruch pride. Our uniquely designed cone will be easily distinguishable from the traditional yellow/ orange traffic cones. Not only will these cones designate special parking, they will be strategically placed in spaces in close proximity to the Baruch campus buildings.
