Meanwhile, In the Real World…

I try to visit MOMA as often as I can whenever I have time, so visiting MOMA for this exhibition was just another visit to me. The title of the exhibition was “This is for Everyone: Design Experiments for the Common Good.” It was held on the 3rd floor. As soon as I entered the exhibition room, the piece on the right side grabbed my attention right away. As I read the title and descriptions of the piece, I realized that it was related to what we are learning in my 3d digital design class.

The title of the piece is “Kinematic Dress” and below is the short description of the piece:

Working at the intersection of math, science, and technology, designers Jessica Rosenkarantz and Jesse Luis-Rosenberg study patterns inherent to organic forms, using them as blueprints for man-made printed materials. Kinematics is a branch of classical mechanics that investigates the motion of points and objects, a tem adopted by the designers for their 4d printing system. The dress consists of over three thousand unique parts that have been combined into one complete, complex assemblage in a 3d printer. To produce the dress, the client’s body is imaged through a 3D scan, onto which the garment surface is then digitally tessellated onto triangular shapes that hinge together (the smaller the triangles, the more flexible and likely to drape the fabric will be.) the tessellation is compressed to fit the volume of the 3d printer and the form is generated using a selective laser sinter process that binds nylon powder into concrete forms. This method allows garments to be customized based on clients’ individual body shapes and aesthetic desires.”One of the most interesting facts was that using a blue printer and a 3d printer, the designer was able to design a piece of dress that accurately fits the shape of its client, and also could add complicated designs and patterns that are difficult to made with other designing technologies. Clients can also choose details of the product they want to order through the webpage, and the estimated price will appear as the clients customize the design to fulfill their needs and desire.

I thought this exhibition not only introduces the new technology to the public, but also provides limitless inspirations to others who may become potential users of 3d printers in the near future and trigger them to create and develop their own designs using the new technology.

It was very interesting to actually see the products that are made in the same way as we learned and practiced during the 3d digital design class, and also learn how these products are being used in our lives.

I could also see other products and designs at the exhibition that can be easily found or could be very useful in our daily lives.
