The event that I attended, was 3d meet up at Shapeways, which is a 3D printing company located in Long Island City. The sponsor of the event was Kat K. Co-Organizer. The people that seemed to be attending at this events are people that are very impress with 3D printing, once I walked in to the event I saw people from different backgrounds and ages. They seemed to be very interested. The purpose of this event was to inform and teach people how this company worked. They also gave us a tour of the company, showing us what 3D machines they used to create their interesting object, also the different materials they used.

As is shown in the pictures above, The organizer of the events placed a display of some of their objects made of different materials. Once I saw this, it expanded my thinking because I thought 3D printing was only made out of plastic. In this case they had all different material, from sandstone to steel. When I was walking trough the company, I saw many machines from different sizes. There were many big machines, but also very small that were used in for really small objects like the 3rd picture. That machine focused on small details that any other machine can’t do. This event made me realized how there are different machines, and methods to print an object in 3D.

3 observations:

  • My first lesson that I learned in this even was how there are actually a lot of people that are very enthusiast about 3D objects, Before I would not have thought that this was a “thing” for many people.
  • My second observation that I learned was that there are many different materials that an object can be printed out, not only plastic as I thought. All the materials take different time and it is different process to print, but is is possible, and that is awesome!
  • The third lesson that I learned was that there can be 3D jewelry printed out. There is a ring made out of gold in my last picture, it is not really visible because it was inside the plastic frame.

To conclude, this event has made me have more of an open mind when it comes to 3D printed objects. My participation of this event linked to what I have learned in class in different ways, for example, on how I can use Sketchup to create a object I would like to have 3D printed and send it to Shapeways.
