One of my favorite shows right now is the key play to benign underdog and having to face obstacles , just like we talked in class. Izuku , the main character wants to be a hero so bad , but unfortunately he doesn’t have a quirk and everyone has denied him of the possibility of becoming a hero. But eventually due to his bravery he was inherited a quirk which he is now learning how to use. Izuku is making his way to being the best hero to ever exist. The obstacles and victories make him notably the character that inspires all and gives hope.

Childish Gambino / E.C

“Funny the day you born that’s really your death sentence”

Childish Gambino , makes this statement in his song ” Life: The Biggest Troll (Andrew Auernheimer). Saying how the day you’re born is really your death sentence goes to show someone play on life. How one defines how others live and the way they view it. To say when you’re born starts down the countdown of your death sentence , is the same insisted to whereas Jefferson is in the cell not knowing exactly when he will face death till they tell him.

“Since emancipation, almost a hundred years ago , they would do any kind of work they could find to keep from working side by side in the field with the niggers…Even took that kind of work from the white boys, because they would do wit so much cheaper than the white boys would,Anything not to work alongside the niggers”(198)

Sometimes within your own race you are faced with racism , you wouldn’t expect that form of monstrosity to someone of your same background. Simply because one is a few shades lighter doesn’t define you to be greater than anybody. Grant repeat that the multattos in his town were willing to do anything to keep from working with “niggers” , their brothers , black men , same background , and in the eyes of the white man a nigger. The mulattos are willing to go as far to charge less for their labor , whites discredits them and their work , just to not work with “niggers”. One is willing to go as far , as limit the amount of pay they should receive for ones labor all to avoid someone like themselves but a few shades lighter. Racism within its own race is a barbaric , sickening and Gaines takes us to this place , so it is known what is going on within the community.

Like Adam, I was apparently united by no link to any other being in existence; but his state was far different from mine in every other respect. He had come forth from the hands of God a perfect creature, happy and prosperous, guarded by the especial care of his Creator; he was allowed to converse with and acquire knowledge from beings of a superior nature, but I was wretched, helpless, and alone. Many times I considered Satan as the fitter emblem of my condition, for often, like him, when I viewed the bliss of my protectors, the bitter gall of envy rose within me.

Throughout all the experts of the novel we’ve read, one of the main themes is beauty, in this passage it’s Satan. In this passage the creature takes it a step further to explain his living condition and his experience as a reference to Satan. What triggers me is how he mentions Adam and says “he come forth the hands of god , a perfect creature” , it is well known about Adam and the creation of the world in 7 days. The creator takes something as beautiful as that and than compares himself to Satan , saying he is best to fit his image. It’s a little drastic , we all know the Devil was no good , he was the bad apple and tried to make everyone come to his side. The creature isn’t a bad person, his feeling of jealous is normal because he didn’t wish to be created looking as monstrous as he does. The reference of beauty here holds sort of the stereotypical idea of beauty , to put it up against goodness and evil , which doesn’t doesn’t truly define ones heart is interesting. The comparison here goes to show you the ways in how our brains are set up in from past times.

The Monster’s Historic Sacrifice (Group D)

In  K.A Nuzum article ,” The Monster’s Sacrifice – Historic Time: The Uses Liminal Time in Monster Literature , the author introduces a new perspective of “monsters” in a way we can relate. When it comes to monsters we see them as something abnormal and different  but Nuzum mentions two terms that shows a similarity between us and them. Mythic time and liminal time , liminal time is “where status and boundary do not apply”  , as defined by Nuzum. Mythic time is something that can always be repeated. In difference with monsters and humans is that we face one more category in which is historic is your daily life. With hearing that you have some similarities it sparks some interests and makes you question , am I myself a monster?

Nuzum provides examples within books we’ve grown to love and makes it her point more clear. Where the Wild Things are is a classic and shows as a kid we like to pretend/act like monsters as entertainment for himself. The conflict comes in when a human acts with monstrous ways its not normal nor accepted. The protagonist Max , acting so (monstrous) leads him to being punished like any parent would do to their child for inappropriate behavior. Being punished isolates you from the outside world , putting a pause on your avaiblity to your historic time but allows Max to go into liminal time. While Max is in this state he’s able to roam free and do as he pleases in this place he created called “Where the Wild Things Are”. In this phase of time Max is able to create everything he imagined in the historic without his limitations. Its the same for us when we are young and our imagination is running wild and we’re doing crazy our parents can’t understand , the only result is punishment. When you’re punished and isolate yourself. You begin to imagine a world and a time where things can go your way , a perfect utopia.

Another good point that Nuzum made was when the novel the Strange Case of Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson is introduced. A well known and respected doctor , creates an addiction to a potion of his creation. This potion allows him to isolate himself and to act in monstrous ways in a form no one knows him in. This freedom to act so outrageous becomes addictive to him , he enjoys his isolation till he realizes the damage of his monstrous ways. This is the same as someone being a well known profession and becoming a drug addict , or alcoholic because they feel no boundaries (slipping into liminal time) until the morning after when they sober up and are back in historic time.

Do you see a relation with monsters and yourself ? Can you define yourself within this characters from the novels chosen by Nuzum ?

Do you think liminal time , is the same as someone have devilish ways and only exposing them when alone ?
