Final – “But That’s Mine!”
This project has been the most challenging yet rewarding experience ever! I have learned so much during this semester like creating something for myself with only my ideas was harder than I thought! Looking back on everything, I wish I would have done things a little differently. I would have started with doing more research instead of jumping straight into the designs. With that being said, I am very proud of the end result and I definitely plan on continuing creating more stories with Kae.
I was inspired to make a children’s book since I am a nanny and an aunt of two nieces and nephews. I am obviously always around kids so I wanted to create a story that kids could learn and relate to.
Kae is the main character and her look was inspired by 6 year old niece Amarie.
I am a big fan of classic cartoons so I wanted to create something similar to Madeline, so Kae attends an all girls school and they wear uniform. At this point, I had already placed all the content in InDesign and created quick illustrations of the characters.
I researched different classrooms online and decided to illustrate with a cut&paste element.
My favorite typeface is Avante Garde so that was my first choice but it wasn’t the right fit.
After one of our class sessions, I was advised to visit a children’s book for more research so I took everyones suggestion and went Book of Wonders on 18th street.
Classic children’s book (Madeline)
Modern children’s book (Henny by Elizabeth Rose Stanton)
After checking out a few books, I noticed that most of them had this design element where its just the character on a plain background making different movements. I knew I had to add that element to my book.
First draft of the spread
I really hope everyone enjoys my story because I had a great yet stressful time creating it!
