Da Future

The community service proposal project (try saying that five times fast) did not require me to draw upon many of the resources inside Baruch. (Did you try saying community service proposal project five times fast? No? Why not?) Instead I had to draw upon my group members. What I took from working on this was the importance of each person working to their strengths whether it was typing out emails or forming the powerpoint each person had a role. I think this sense of teamwork will greatly help us in the future, especially when we have to volunteer together next semester. (This is your last chance to try saying community service proposal project five times fast. I’ll wait right here.)

The biggest reason I chose to write this blog post, beside the fact that it was a requirement, was to answer the question of where I see myself in three years. I have no idea. That’s the nice thing about being a first semester (almost second semester) freshman, I still have a lot of time to make the decision of where I’m going to be three years from now. I plan on pursuing every avenue possible and not letting an opportunity pass by me without thoroughly investigating it first. I can be anywhere three years from now, but I know that when I get there I will have enjoyed getting there more than anybody else did.

I wanna be the very best like no one ever was

I believe that my role as a Baruch Scholar is to be the best. Whether this is in the Baruch community or in the larger global community. We are the best Baruch has to offer academically and culturally. We have all come from a variety of backgrounds and by working together we will become the best group of people in our society.

I have been given the opportunity to attend college for almost nothing. Since I was given this chance I need to use to not only better my life but also to give back to the people around me. This means giving myself in service to others. It is very easy to simply donate to a good cause, but service is more than that. It is giving yourself to others. There is nothing more you can give than your work. This is especially true of us Baruch Scholars. We are the best that New York City has to offer and our work is also the best. There is nothing more honorable than to give yourself in work to others. Our work in the community will hopefully not only help improve things for the organization and the people the organization serves in the short term but also in the long term. Service also goes beyond the eight or fifteen hours we are obligated to work for our scholarship program but even past graduation. As the best people in our society we have to work to better our society. It is our duty to help those below us reach the same excellence that we are able to achieve seemingly naturally.

Who am I? Where am I from? Where am I going? The basic answer to these questions is that I am Jonathan Haviv from Queens and Indiana and I am attending Baruch College. In only two hundred fifty words that might be the best answer possible. But I am going to give it a shot, because that is just how I do. Also that’s what the assignment is, so I should probably answer the questions.

I am most recently from Floral Park otherwise known as FloPo. I don’t call it that but I have heard it called that. I went to high school an hour and a half away from my home because I really did not have anything better to do between six and eight in the morning everyday. High school taught me to always look at things in the best light possible and to always have fun. If you don’t then life is going to be tough.

The next importance influence on my life is the rapper Lil B. I discovered him during my junior year of high school and thought his message held a lot of meaning. Although many people believe that Lil B only releases stupid songs as a parody of rap, he actual does stand for something. If you don’t believe me just check out his speech at NYU. He talks about looking at people as more than just their race or appearance but at who they are. I think there needs to be more people who believe in that.

Now that I have given you some background on me, its time to talk about where I am going. Tomorrow I going to class and I’ll see my learning community. They are probably some of the best people I have met so far at Baruch. I don’t really know where I’m going beyond that. I still haven’t chosen my major or what I want to do with my life. I want to play in the NBA one day, and completely believe that I will if I keep practicing. I’m happy to see where life takes me and not to try to tie myself down with too many plans. Wow. I’m starting to sound like a hippie. I wonder when that happened.

P.S. My blog post title came from a wu tang name generator. Read into that what you will.
