Give&Take

“I received more than I could have given.” Ironically, this not only stands true in regards to volunteering in a non-profit organization, but so too, it stands true in the class whose project is to volunteer. This seminar was effective by introducing specific programs and services offered by Baruch College. Without this seminar, I would most likely be unaware of these programs and services. The project that this class expects of us, accurately represents what the goal of the seminar was. I feel that the goal was to expose the students to their surrondings. To allow the student to question, and to explore their envirnment. The research and group collaboartion that was done with this project exposed an unbeknown level in my surronding environment. The research enabled me to see what types of volunteer organizations surrond me.

Personally, I have been volunteering weekly in non-for-profit organizations for the past 8 years, and when I came to Baruch that was something I felt was missing. I not only had adjustment issues with my classes and work-load, but there was a deeper void. I wasn’t able to pinpoint this void, until this volunteer project was introduced to the class. At that moment I realized that it was this feeling of giving back that I had been missing. It’s a feeling that one can’t accurately describe. As stated previously, with volunteering one gains more than they can give. Merely from the research of my groups organization and the presentations of my classmates, I learnt so much about my surrondings. It gave me insight into my classmate’s personalities, and taught me a lot about leadership.

This class, specifically this project, inspired me to join groups, organizations, volunteer programs around me. It inspired me to take advantage of the facilities, resources, faculty in the school, and the privileges I was given. Yes I moved homes, I changed schools and I made new friends, but it does not mean that I am exempt from giving back to my community. Seeing the amount they give me, obligates me to donate my time and talents to my new community. I do not know where I will be in three years, but I hope it is in a community that I have made my own.

Using Our College Resources

So far, with my experience at Baruch, the library and honors study room have been the most helpful resources I’ve utilized. I’m here pretty early so I almost always have time to work on homework for different classes in the morning. It has especially helped with researching and learning about various volunteer programs for my group to participate in. The library databases in particular helped tremendously to provide us with reliable information on different organizations. Because of the introduction I’ve had to using databases in my research for the community service project, it will be much easier for me to do so in the future for the research papers I will definitely have to write in later classes. I won’t be wasting time exploring the technical side of databases and instead I’ll be able to go straight to actual research. Aside from helping me with future research, this project has given me a greater appreciation for volunteer work in general. I’ve realized that it is an invaluable service to one’s community and society in general. It also brings a sense of personal fulfillment to me by being able to help those in need. I look forward to continuing volunteer work throughout my time here at Baruch and even past it.

This community service project has taught my group and I valuable lessons for my future at and beyond Baruch. At first, it was hard to secure an organization to work with. Through the Starr career center and social media sites such as Linked In, we discovered various organizations that appeared to be in need of volunteers; however, getting in touch with a representative was difficult at first. It was clear to my group that if we were going to find a charity, we needed to take the initiative and make a persistent commitment in coordinating a volunteer effort. This brought us to Meals on Wheels where we finally got in contact with a representative that was willing to make us apart of their team. The community service project forced us to go out of our comfort zone and deal professionally with our prospect. Personally, the project not only showed us the importance of seizing and opportunity, but more importantly the possibility of creating an opportunity and making it happen yourself. This challenge in our project only prepared us for the skills we will need to implement as our years at Baruch continue. A professional attitude is key, but also motivation, confidence and other communication skills are vital components to success. Unfortunately, I have no yet joined a job because I was trying to adjust to the school for my first semester. It seemed that I was waiting for the right club to just fall into my lap; however, it is clear that I need to go out and inquire about different clubs in order to find my nitch in the Baruch community. This community service project has emphasized volunteering as something far more valuable than anticipated. It is no longer a burden or just a requirement to check off in order to graduation. Volunteering is a learning experience that can help us grow on a personal and occupational level. It is clear that the work one does when they volunteer has a positive emotional impact on both the receiving and giving party. In the next 3 years, I hope to continue working with charities close to my heart, including but not limited to The Alzheimer’s Association. Finding time to balance charity volunteer hours with my demanding academic and occupational responsibilities will be a challenge, but I hope to stay motivated to help grow the community.

Throughout the semester, the availability of resources around campus has been tremendously helpful. My participation in the Community Service Project encouraged me to look at the broader picture and really think about the community and figure out a way to improve it. My group decided to work at a soup kitchen at the Father’s Heart Ministries and I am very much looking forward to following through with this decision next semester. Preparation for the project presentation has allowed me to learn more about what makes a good presentation, which is extremely helpful for the future.  One of the main resources we used for the Community Service Project was the library, especially the study rooms. Finding a spot in the library for a group of four or more to sit is not so easy and so the study rooms came to be of great help. I definitely intend on using more of the study rooms in the future.

I have not been very active in student clubs but I hope to change that during the next three years. I went to a couple of meetings for Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society and it seems like something I would want to become more involved with in the future. I also hope to join Women in Business. In the next three years, I hope I will figure out what to major in and what career I would like to pursue. I hope taking a range of different classes and going to club meetings and workshops at Baruch will help me figure out what direction to take. I also hope to get an internship to gain some experience for the future. In addition, after we fulfill our requirement for community service I still hope to remain involved in the community somehow and continue giving back. My main goal during the next couple of years is to gain perspective and determine what I would enjoy spending my life doing and then go after it.

Community service was, is, and always will be a big part of my life. Although the areas of service may vary, they share a common goal: To give back to the community. For this reason, I carry on without any hesitance or cautiousness. The Community Service Project gave me the opportunity to step out of my comfort zone and seek out a different type of organization like inMotion. It’s wonderful to find organizations like this because it is often overlooked and considered less significant than other large organizations. I am most glad that I took the time to attend the Baruch Volunteer Fair because, otherwise, I would have not found inMotion, a small and less known, but most certainly a meaningful, organization. I realize that there are many resources available around the school, and it only takes a small amount of effort to discover them. There are bountiful opportunities to expand one’s interests. Joining clubs and seeking out for guidance at the writing center and the STARR career center have helped me personally. A thorough step-by-step help from the writing tutor impressed me, and “a hidden gem” program at the STARR career center. I call it “a hidden gem” because I would not have found out about it if I did not take the initiative to seek the updates on programs available at Baruch. I am excited for a program I recently signed up for, because it will help me set down the first trail to my potential career. I also find speaking to professors, advisors, and fellow students outside of classroom help bond relationships, create networks, and learn from their experiences. The community service project has inspired me to use my innovative skills to good use. I am currently thinking about ways to help low wage income families who earn money by selling their products on the streets. This may perhaps be done through a creative marketing system or a specifically designed product targeting a specific audience. It is something I’m thinking about carrying out into action. If anyone were interested in coming up with brilliant ideas that I know we are capable of generating, it would be great to come together for a good cause. Honestly, I don’t know where I’ll be in three years. I may be walking ferociously though mass of people to get to work in the city working for a big company, or waking up to chirping birds in my suburban home slowly getting ready to go work for a firm, or going through major jetlag traveling from one place to another, or enjoying my life on a rocking chair somewhere in the South and becoming a southern belle. Who knows. But I know this much, I’ll be okay and every previous experiences and memories will not go to waste. I’m constantly evolving to become the best I can be.
