Journal 3: Next Steps

There are numerous resources around campus that can aid in the Community Service Project. I would say the major resources would be the library, the library data bases, and the computer labs. Both the library and the computer labs contain computers with internet access which all serve as pivotal tools in researching organizations. The internet is a medium where you can both find an organization that meets your preferred service category, get contact information for that organization, and find out information and history on that organization. In addition, the library databases serve as a source where further information on the organizations can be found and reviewed.

Going forward I do wish to get involved on campus and as of now I did join the student government and look to get more involved in it going forward. However, this did not contribute to my community service project.

By using the aforementioned resources for the project, me and my group were able to to become familiar with resources and resource exploration tools around campus. This can aid in future classes who need similar resource proceedings.  The research done for the Community Service Project served as a bit of an ice breaker in order to get involved with and familiar with these research tools. These tools and methods will need to be used again in the future of my own and all of our studies at Baruch.

Before this project, I had a very in depth understanding of community service through the involvement I had in Campus Ministry service events at my high school. This project has not served to heighten my understanding, but has provided a medium for the already instilled understanding to continue here at Baruch.

In the next 3 years, I see myself working hard to positively benefit myself by advancing my knowledge of the world and its interactions with the people that inhabit it. Overall knowledge is the goal; however, I wish to be able to do this while still maintaining good grades and gaining acceptance into my choice of law school in order to go forward into the next step in life. A step that would lead to my career and thus into the rest of my life.

As students at Baruch, we are offered a vide variety of resources that help us succeed. This aid comes in many different forms, from inspiring professors to the immense amount of caffeine available at the cafeteria. Throughout the semester, we have been assigned projects and work that have seemed impossible to do on our own. In our Communications class, we were asked to deliberate on public policy. This seemed quite overwhelming due to the sheer amount of research necessary to write an informative speech. The Newman Library offers many services, Ask a Librarian, being one of many. This service allows students to communicate with librarians 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. I can attest to this, for I sent a chat message at 1:00 AM and received a reply instantly. The availability of this resource gives everyone a certain advantage when completing assignments. Obviously, the centers here can only take one half way–they won’t do the work for you–but they certainly give one the extra push that is sometimes needed.

While my participation in the Project has been limited mainly because my group hasn’t gone to the organization to volunteer yet, my perception of what it means to serve your community has changed significantly. In researching which organization to volunteer at, I came across a variety of different forms of giving back to the community. It ranges from  taking care of animals to cleaning parks to aiding the elderly. While there are many mediums through which individuals can assist their community, the only important thing is that they are actively trying to improve society. No one service is better than the other, they are all equal because they give back.

Where do I see myself in three years? I don’t know. Hopefully in a killer suit marching down Wall street with a cup of tea in my hand (I don’t like coffee). In three years I hope to be happy and healthy. I hope to be employed, working for something that I love (even though I don’t know what that is right now). I hope to be surrounded by good people and my family. The future isn’t set in stone and I’m okay with that. I look forward to all the opportunities Baruch throws my way.

There are plenty of places I learned about like the Starr Center or the Library that will definitely prove useful in the future, but I still have not utilized them. Most of the help I received, for this project, and for any other issues I had came directly from the LC. We were all confused together, until someone was able to untangle a mess or pull through. I’ve realized that sometimes you will be that person and sometimes you will not. It’ll be a push and pull process, but asking for help and providing help is a big part of it.

 

What will I be doing in three years? Who knows?! I love to make plans and stick to them, but three years is too far. I don’t know what my interest will have evolved into. I don’t know how my values will have changed. An obvious long-term goal would be to be on track for graduation. But if three years have passed from this point, I hope to do a lot more than just graduate. There is study abroad, and internships, campus events that I have been lax in participating in. Having typed that, I also need to remind myself there are tests to take, projects to complete, and always, always sleep to catch up on.
