Blog #1 Career Goals

As someone who is fascinated by words and their many implications, I truly look forward to having the chance of improving the skill of communicating effectively. Effective communication is the foundation of success as well as a necessary prerequisite for almost any professional career. Perception is the architect of all reality, and most fascinating to me has always been the role well crafted words play in shaping such perceptions.

I am pursuing an MBA with a focus on real estate and finance. Real Estate to me has always been as much about an experience as it is practical. In other words, selling real estate needs to be about painting a picture. The more beautiful the picture, the more successful you are at selling it. Beauty is “in the eyes of the beholder”, therefore for each person, beauty is something else. Having the skill to masterfully paint such a picture or experience with well-crafted words is therefore an invaluable asset. Honing and perfecting the ability to communicate and connect with people is an essential and vital tool to being successful.

Progressing in this class will give me a chance to work on a range of areas. Particularly, I hope to work on being able to formulate ideas in a more effective and timely way. Often, I know inherently what I am feeling but have a hard time translating those thoughts into words. Choosing the right words and doing so seamlessly– without much deliberation– is an area, which I hope to improve upon.

  1. Mr. Mayer,

This is a good effort for your first communication blog!

Fortunately for you we do not emphasize grammar and structure when we evaluate the communication blogs. While you do an adequate job of explaining your ambitions, it is overshadowed by concerns in your written presentation which can cause a distraction to anyone with a better communication sense.

For example, this blog is awkward and lacks organization. Rather than writing a confessional, it may make sense for you to explore how you plan on overcoming some of your concerns. Fro example, if you seem to take longer than expected to develop your narrative, perhaps there are some strategies I can help you learn that will get you over that hurdle.

In terms of the content, there is redundancy and repetition which can be misinterpreted by the reader. Although you say you like to “paint pictures with words”, in a fast pace business environment such as real estate there is little time to contemplate the ideal language.

While I do not emphasize grammar, etc. in the blogs, poor sentence structure and grammatical errors can also distract the reader. Some examples of these errors are run-on sentences, sequencing errors, double negatives, and punctuation mistakes.

It would help to take the time to proofread your work several times before you render it a “finished product”. You seem to have the potential to improve this aspect of your communication abilities; however, you must commit to improving your writing.

    Thanks,

    Emmett Green
