This week, I went to Daa! Dumplings to try Russian-style dumplings.
Location: Daa! Dumplings at Turnstyle Underground Market in Columbus Circle (connected to the 59th St-Columbus Circle subway station)
Price: $8.75 for a “Snack” size (12 pieces), $12.75 for a meal (16 pieces), and you can combine two different dumpling flavors in one order.
Pictured: Beef and pork vareniki with Georgian adjika, a sweet dipping sauce that compliments the taste of the beef and pork fillings.
Daa! Dumplings is the perfect place to go on your way home from work, school, or for a quick pick me up. Just steps from the subway, this quirky dumpling spot has four different types of dumplings, each with different kinds of fillings and a choice of four different dipping sauces.
I tried the vareniki style dumplings with beef and pork filling. Vareniki dumplings are half-moon shaped steam dumplings, and look like the type offered by your local chinese food place. However, these are no ordinary dumplings. Both the beef and pork fillings were seasoned to perfection and the Georgian Adjika sauce is a great addition.
If you’re having trouble deciding what to get, the ladies behind the counter are more than happy to make their own recommendations (this is especially handy when it comes to picking your dipping sauce).
Ana Tslavi, a cashier at Daa! Dumplings, recommended the Georgian Adjika sauce with my Vareniki dumplings instead of the mustard mayo I was going to get.
“The mustard is too hot and will compete with the flavor of the vareniki,” she said, adding “the adjika sauce is sweet and doesn’t cover up the taste.”
With a multitude of options on the menu, it’s impossible to run out of new things to try at Daa! Dumplings. The welcoming and helpful staff make it easy to decide what to get, and the atmosphere of the Turnstyle Underground Market just adds to the experience.
