This teaching material was developed as a result of the CUNY 1969 Teach-in & Retreat that took place in Summer 2023. The assignment asks students to research and tell the story of a Latina figure, a conflict, or an event that involves social struggles affecting Latinas, draw from archives such as the CUNY 1969 project, and link the message of the corrido to present-day issues.
This teaching material was inspired by the “Creative Writing Assignment: Write Your Own Corrido” for Introduction to Chicana/o Culture (CHI 50) taught by Prof. Maceo Montoya at the University of California, Davis during Winter 2023.

Faculty Information
Lizbeth De La Cruz Santana is an Assistant Professor in Chicano/a/x Studies at the Weismann School of Arts and Sciences, Black and Latino Studies (BLS) Department at Baruch College. She is a cultural worker and interdisciplinary qualitative Latinx public scholar who studies contemporary processes of migration. Her current research project focuses on childhood arrival migrants to the United States. Her academic craft centers Indigenous and feminist pedagogies and methodologies to acknowledge different forms of accessible, reciprocal knowledge-making responsive to community needs. Lizbeth holds a Ph.D. from the University of California, Davis, specializing in Latin American Literature and Cultures and a designated emphasis on Human Rights.
