Similar to Arabian Nights (AKA One Thousand and One Nights) this entire book’s plot was driven by affairs, distrust, murder and regret. In Arabian nights all of the stories that Scheherazade tells start with a man believing for some reason that their wife has been cheating on them. Often times they are deceived by someone and act quickly and stupidly without having any proof. Almost every single story that she told to the king ended with the main character killing the supposedly adulterous wife. Soon after the murder new evidence would be introduced proving the not so adulterous wife’s innocence and the husband becomes filled with grief and instantly regrets murdering their innocent wife. Similar to this, the entire story of Othello is about how Iago is trying to get revenge on Othello by getting him to believe that his wife has cheated on him with Cassio. Eventually, Othello buys into what seems like evidence against Desdemona his wife. Desdemona is simply trying to help Cassio be reinstated into his previous position that he lost because of another one of Iago’s evil plans. Because of spending so much time discussing Cassio’s situation with him, it seems like they are together too much for it to be a normal friendship making Othello suspicious. With the helpful push of Iago’s devious plans Othello becomes blinded with rage and jealousy. When Othello’s mother’s handkerchief that he gifted Desdemona is found in Cassio’s possession Othello believes that he has all the proof that he needs to officially accuse Desdemona with adultery. Desdemona realizes that nothing she says will change his mind and ends up being smothered in bed on her wedding sheets by the jealous Othello. After many other deaths happen suddenly the truth about Iago’s villainous plans begins to spill out and his wife Emilia puts the nail in the coffin when she reveals that she is the reason that Cassio had Desdemona’s handkerchief. Othello realizes the grave mistake that he has made and is filled with regret. He stabs himself with a dagger and falls dead by his wife’s side. The story of Othello seems like a story that Scheherazade could’ve told the king in Arabian Nights and it would’ve fit that book perfectly.
