Analysis of an Image

adam_and_eve

The story of Othello strongly reminded me of the story of Adam and Eve, This image is showing the serpent whispering to Eve for her to feed the forbidden apple fruit to Adam. Adam is shown scratching his head clearly unsure of whether or not he should be eating the forbidden fruit. Similar to this painting Iago was always by Othello’s side, whispering to him things that would lead him to assume that his wife Desdemona was cheating on him. At first Othello obviously had his doubts and didn’t instantly accept that Desdemona was having an affair. Similarly Adam didn’t instantly accept Eve’s proposition to eat the fruit god himself forbade him from eating. When Emelia steals the handkerchief that was given to Desdemona by Othello, Iago finally got the one piece of evidence that would open Othello’s eyes to Desdemona’s supposed unfaithfulness. In the story of Adam and Eve when Adam finally gives into the serpent’s plan to eat the forbidden fruit, it is said that his eyes were opened to the evils of the world that god was keeping him blind to before. Because of his eating the forbidden fruit Adam and Eve were banished and forbidden to ever return to the Garden of Eden. When Othello discovered the handkerchief in Cassio’s possession his eyes were opened to the true evils he believed his beloved wife Desdemona has been hiding from him all along. He then proceeded to banish Desdemona from existence. After Adam and Eve eat the fruit they begin to recognize the evil that is within the serpent, just like Othello begins to recognize the evil within Iago after he murders his wife.
