Insight and Mindset
For this assignment I am going to attempt the One Question assignment. I am going to record video on my phone, and edit them on my computer with Final Cut Pro. However with time constraints I’m not sure if I will be able to generate a quality enough video to accomplish the task in a way I see fit. As a backup plan I’m going to also attempt the interview/music assignment. For this I will transfer mp3 files to audacity, and record questions through the microphone input on my computer.
When asking such a broad question, the one question assignment can prove successful in framing someone’s insight and mindset at the time and place the video was taken. The openness of the question leaves the responder of the question with free reign to speak of anything that they see as a fit answer. In retrospect these videos could capture the most honest thoughts from these people at that specific time.
What’s the question that you’re going to ask? Who are you going to ask? Where? How will you frame it? How might these variable impact the responses you get? These controls are important if your goal is to capture “the most honest thoughts.”
You also don’t indicate what you think the potential value of this project might be for the making of a historical argument. You’re going to have to think about that, and write about it for Wednesday.
The question is going to ask, ‘The modern world is dependent on innovation and looking forward to maintain our rising standard of living, is the study of history necessary for our society?’ I dont want any of the responders to be influenced from the others response; so isolating them while they answer is important to garner an authentic and honest response.
The value in this assignment is the conversation wasn’t prompted by my own insight on the question, but rather their own response which they used their own previous knowledge to respond to the question. I think this is an affective tactic, because the only thing that prompts the response, is the question itself. I could see this being a vital tool in gathering information about someone’s mindset and insight on a particular topic.
