I found this article quite interesting just after discussing the Disney Case in class. I do believe that Disney didn’t take into consideration the possible threats from local theme parks. Wang, the richest man in China believes the price was too high to build Disneyland which will raise the prices to other theme parks in China. He also believes that Disneyland doesn’t belong in China because China already has their version of Mickey Mouse, Wanda.
This is an interesting development. However, I still think that Disney will be victorious in this war for the following reasons:
– Disney has learnt from their experience in Paris and have taken on local partners
– The high ticket prices is only an assumption – one of the advantages of global standardization is economies of scale (cost effective)
– Disney has taken measures to ensure its success: opening a chain of language schools to teach English, delivering hours of television programing to television stations
– there’s buy in from elected officials
I agreed with Tamica. We live in a world where diversity is a necessity for sucess. The Older generation is more inclined to stay within more familiar culture and environments, but the younger generation wants to experience the world. I believe that Disney will succeed in bringing the world of Disney by carefully choosing what aspects of Disney to integrate, merge or preserve. The mission of Disney is: “is to be one of the world’s leading producers and providers of entertainment and information…seek to develop the most creative, innovative and profitable entertainment experiences and related products in the world.”
