Highlights from the articles based on class discussion:
“Our goal was to make it distinctively Disney and authentically Chinese,” said Iger.
Distinctively Disney means that the company brought rich content and quality standards to the process, but authentically Chinese in that it worked to bring the stories alive through a local lens and adapted the construction process to embrace cultural differences.
Local storytellers were given a traditional Disney story and asked to break it down and retell the story from a Chinese perspective so it better resonates with local guests. Those stories are delivered using the latest technology to further enhance the guest experience.
My comments:
I thought this was an interesting article based on our class discussion on Disney Paris. Disney Tokyo fell closer to the global standardization side of the global standardization-vs.-local adaption scale and Disney Paris started out the same as Disney Tokyo but as we discussed from the case needed to fall somewhere in between. As a lesson learned from Disney Paris, I believe Disney Shanghai will fall in the middle of the global standardization-vs.-local adaption scale to still maintain the Disney brand while adapting to Chinese culture. Therefore maintaining a successful balance.
