The topic I chose was about the crisis in Flint,Michigan. I chose an article that had facts about the problem in Michigan. The crisis is in the pipes and water in Michigan. The water and the pipes contained lead in it and had make the water undrinkable and unusable. The water had a weird smelly odor, dirty , and discolored. This made Michigan have a scarcity in water and people not being able to do simple everyday things like drinking water, brushing their teeth, taking a shower etc.It is significant because all the citizens in Flint had been suffering from this and had suffered the consequences of the it. They were unable to function and go on with their everyday life without water. The children had especially suffered because the drinking water had contained lead which could lead to brain damages, disabilities , lead poisoning through consumption. Many children had symptoms of a disability, showed brain disfunction, and some showed symptoms of lead poisoning. It has been affecting the people in Michigan significantly. The reason why I thought this was important was because it is not well known like other issues. Most people didn’t even know what was happening in Michigan until celebrities and influencers mentioned it. This is an example of civil unrest. It shows how until celebrities or influencers showed what was happening in Michigan, most people were unaware of the situation. Awareness was only brought to the crisis when famous people stepped in to talk about the issue and asked people to help. This is somewhat common in the world because we are unaware of what is going on in other states and other countries what can be important to know. This is civil unrest because this issue was unaware of by the public and was not really solved by the government.
Many citizens in Michigan protested the government and said “ Water is a human right”. They shouldn’t be deprived of the right to have clean water. Water should have been accessible to everyone. This crisis has started in 2016 and is still ongoing in 2019. If the government had wanted to help, then the issue would’ve been fixed. The government did the minimum to help fix the issues. They claimed that they did a water “testing” where they claimed that the water was clean and safe enough to drink. However, citizens in Flint were still suspicious and refused to drink the water. They were right to not drink the water because the water still wasn’t safe or clean enough to drink. Even though this is such a big problem in Michigan, it is concealed within the public. Not much people know about the crisis. This shows how the government always fails to take care of the citizens. They promise to do something but fails to do what they had promised. They tell the people that they will fix the water issue but the problem is still ongoing in Michigan, and it has been 4 years since it has started. This had led to a protest in wanting to change things. The protest also included the fact that the government had wanted to cancel Flint’s supply of bottled water which was very limited. It was the only thing the citizens could get to survive and now they were cancelling the only thing that they were depending on. It is right that they protest because the government has failed the people of Michigan.
