Drive to Survive Recommendation
My recommendation for the class would be Formula 1: Drive to Survive on Netflix. you probably don’t know about the sport but you probably have heard about Nascar, but it’s the pinnacle of motorsports. It’s a competition where 20 drivers compete for the race win crossing the finish line first. Its a global sport where races are hosted in 21 countries across 5 continetns. There are 10 teams on the grid. Mercedes, Redbull, Ferrari, Racing Point, Renault, Alpha Tauri, Alfa Romeo, Mclaren, Williams, and Haas which is actually an American team. Formula 1 is also known as f1. It is the most popular auto racing sport in the world and is the highest level of single-seat car racing. F1 is contested in varying numbers of racing throughout a calendar year, and each race is known as a Grand Prix drivers will drive a specially designed racecar that is designed to go around a track in as fast a time as possible. there are three parts to any race. A Formula 1 Grand Prix takes place over the course of a one-weekend free practice session and qualifying and the race events are as follows. There are 3 free practice sessions, 2 are held early on a Friday FP2 is later on Friday. Practice is where drivers can test their cars on the racetrack. This is important how the car will run given the weather and environment and also get the driver used to the track. Saturday Host two seasons FP3 and qualifying. For qualifying to determine what position each driver starts in the race, each driver will complete laps of the track on their own. The fastest driver will start the race on the grid in the 1st position, the 2nd fastest in the 2nd position, 3rd fastest in the 3rd position until all drivers have an assigned position. and Sunday the Grand Prix race. once qualifying has determined the order where drivers start, the actual race is ussually held on a Sunday. Drivers will do one warm-up lap and then line up in the position that they will start as determined by qualifying once all 5 lights go out, the race begins drivers have to complete a predetermined number of laps, for the total race distance of about 305 km. Whoever crosses the line first after all laps have been completed wins the race. Drivers receive points 25 for the first, 18 for the second 15 for the third, then 12,10,8,6,4,2, and 1 for 10th place. For the driver with the most point at the end of the season wins the world championship. in the last decade, only two teams won the constructor’s championship and just three different drivers won a driver’s championship Red bull was Sebastian Vettel dominating from 2010-2013 with their design until the regulation change in 2014-2020 time and Mercedes unleashed their powerhouse power unit in overall unstoppable design with Lewis Hamilton shining for the rest of the decade only interrupted by his 2016 teammate Nico Rosberg. This season the 2021 season is an exciting battle between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen that could last until the season final in Abu Dhabi. Next season 2022 there will be a new car introduced so it an great opportunity for new eyes to the sport because there will be 23 races and one of them will be held in Miami, Florida. There are three seasons of DTS so there is enough to watch. Season 1 is based on the 2018 season. season 2, 2019 season 3 2020 season. Hope you guys enjoy!
Vershawn Young & Jamila Lyiscott Response
After reading Vershawn Young’s “Should Writers Use They Own English”. My initial reaction to the text was the writing style young used. It’s a much different form of writing than what is typically considered formal writing. He is using slang words and that way of expressing himself in a way that is considered informal After watching Jamila Lyiscott, “Three Ways to Speak English”. my initial thoughts about the video were the way she spoke it was very unique and inspirational. She called herself a “trilingual orator” because she has three types of Englishes she uses around her surroundings. The first one she speaks in a informal way mostly used with friends or acquaintances. The second one is the formal way society portraits standard English, and the third one is with family in her native Jamacian tongue. All the Englishes that were used were considered “broken” because of Eurocentric ideas that if you don’t use the proper way of speaking a certain kind of English you are not considered articulate, but Jamila Lyiscott counters that argument by saying t hat her different forms of English does not mean she is not intellectual or not willing to code switch but she express that its part of her identity. Something that grabbed my attention in young’s “Should Writers Use They Own English” “If he meant everybody should be thrilled to learn another dialect, then wouldnt everybody be learnin everybody’s dialect? Wouldnt we all become multidialectal and pluralingual? And that’s my exact argument, that we all should know everybody’s dialect, at least as many as we can, and be open to the mix of them in oral and written communication.”(Young,111) I agree with the statement young made because learning different forms of dialect is a positive. There is not such a thing of a proper style of English. We shouldn’t be ashamed of our way of expression but embrace it. Something both Vershawn Young and Jamila Lyiscott tried to convey is that the way people speak in their own forms of English should not be frown upon because using different kind of forms of Englishes does not mean your not getting the point across to people.
Mother Tongue – Amy Tan
In “Mother Tongue” by Amy Tan. The relationship between language and identity. Where she shares her experience of being an Asian-American writer and her sudden use of a more simpler style of English when she is around her mother and when she is not around her mother she speaks in a more formal way of English. This collides with her two worlds which her Mother’s English is perceived from the outside as “broken” or “limited” while she can perfectly understand her mother because she is used to speaking to her in that way. The title of the essay “mother Tongue” describes her native language she is born with and she was not always proud of it because she used to think that people would perceive her mother’s English as in her words “if it were damaged and needed to be fixed”. That not speaking Fluent English makes you inferior or unable to express yourself in other types of ways, as if you weren’t speaking in the same way as others you are looked at as being different because they think you are in simpler terms just dumb. Something that stood out from the essay was the part where she had to call her stockbroker pretending to be her mother for her missing checks. This stood out because I could relate. Grow up in a household where they only spoke Chinese had situations in the past where I had these kinds of things where I had to translate for them or doing the paperwork because they couldn’t understand and weren’t able to do for themselves unless they had my sister and myself. I used to think the same way as Amy but I learned that it’s very difficult for someone to learn a language that is not native to their own.
“The First Day” by Edward P. Jones
After reading “The First Day” by Edward P. Jones, something that I noticed about the text is how well the author uses his choice of wording making the readers feel like it’s their first day of Elementary school. on the first alinea of the first paragraph. The Narrator said something on the lines of “long before I learned to be ashamed of my mother”. This shows that the daughter is foreshadowing a major event that happened that made her feel ashamed of her mother. While i continued reading the story i discovered some reasons why she might be ashamed of her mother. Her mother saiud ”I want her to go here,” 5 my mother says. ”she tried to get her daughter to a better school which was near their church where they lived. They eventually went to the school they were supposed to go and had to sign an form she discovered that her mom couldn’t read. ‘can’t read it. I don’t know how to read or write, and I’m askin you to help me.” which really resingnated to me because i usualy translate things to my family when they need help. In conclusion The mother tries to provide her daughter with access to good education while even though she wasn’t able to do.
