In “The Linguistic Landscape of New York,” Schreiber discusses the different languages used to name shops around the city. Is there a shop or restaurant that you frequent that has a name that automatically brings up certain feelings within you and why? Please share the name of the shop/restaurant, where it is located, and the types of feelings that the name of the shop evokes in you. Your response should be at least three sentences.

A restaurant that brings up certain feelings within me is El Valle, which is a Spanish restaurant in the South Bronx. Although I don’t eat there as much anymore, I used to eat there a lot growing up in the Bronx and when I would often visit my cousins and grandmother. This restaurant brings up certain feelings within me because it reminds me of my childhood in the Bronx. My family would always order out from this place or I would eat there with my cousins. Therefore, this restaurant brings up a sense of nostalgia for me and reminds me of how good their food is. It also brings up a feeling of comfort and satisfaction because I know that whenever I go there, the food will always be delicious and fulfilling. Lastly, it brings up the feeling of happiness because I know that whenever I go there, I am spending time with family and loved ones.
Yes, there is a restaurant near me that brings up memories from my home country. There is a restaurant named “Sagar” near my house. It is a really popular Bengali restaurant. I do not eat there very often; however, the culture and the atmosphere inside reminds me of my brown culture, and how I used to go to restaurants with my cousins in Bangladesh.
In “The Linguistic Landscape of New York” by Brooke Screiber she discusses the diversity we see every day in our city. We mostly see diversity and learn about new cultures in restaurants. One restaurant that makes me have certain feelings is Incas Grill. This Peruvian restaurant in on Staten Island and the service makes my family feel at home, the decorations remind my family how Peru is. It makes me feel very happy that they play traditional music because it brings back many great memories.
I find it really hard to find food from my own culture that tastes better than my mom’s and grandma’s cooking. That may come off as a surprise, being that in New York there are a plethora of Dominican food restaurants. However, I feel like none are made with as much love and frankly enough flavor. So when my family and I went out to eat. We could go to an Italian restaurant called Pizza Beat which was down Central Ave in Yonkers. I remember our waitress with her big white hair and long nails laughing at me every time she took my order and I’d say “spaghetti and nipples, please.” It wasn’t until I got older that I changed my order to chicken parmesan. Unfortunately now, the food hasn’t been good since. The last time I went in, it didn’t even have that savory smell of garlic bread as you walked in. But, I’ll always remember the dinners I had there as a little girl.
A restaurant that brings up certain feelings within me is Flavas in the South Bronx. It is a small Jamaican restaurant but it has always been my favorite place to go to since I was younger. Flavas reminds me of my own culture because the food is similar and whenever I eat at the restaurant it brings comfort.
A restaurant that brings up certain feelings in me is Tastee patees because every time I hear the name I think of a tropical pate similar to the one’s I used to eat back home in Trinidad. The restaurant in east Flatbush in Brooklyn specifically on Church and 32nd. The restaurant sells all different kinds of pates. But just from the name it makes you think of a pate with a different flare to it that makes you want to buy more constantly.
A restaurant that evokes certain feelings and memories to me would be “El Valle” located in the Bronx. This restaurant’s cuisine is both Dominican and Puerto Rican, which are my backgrounds. Visiting this restaurant makes me feel at home and it takes me to my childhood memories of eating in these countries.
A restaurant that brings up certain feeling within me is “Yemen Café”, Which is a middle eastern restaurant that’s located in Brooklyn. Although I don’t eat there very often I usually go there With my family and it brings memories from my home country Yemen due to the food and the environment. When going to that restaurant it makes my family and I feel comfortable and the feeling like where home. And one of the reason why they feel at home is also because the restaurant is located in middle eastern neighborhood .
A restaurant that brings up a certain feeling for me is called “The Brothers Cafe,” it is located in the corner from the first apartment I moved to in NYC. Located in Sunnyside, Queens, it is a hispanic restaurant, and they serve like diner food but also Mexican inspired dishes. Being from Puerto Rico, the only reason this restaurant gives me comfort is because it was the first restaurant me and my family ate at and the closest thing we had to hispanic food really. In Queens you can’t find a Puerto Rican restaurant, so to us walking in there and the workers greeting us nicely, like in Puerto Rico, was welcoming. We always used to grab breakfast there, eat lunch, and the owners and workers got accustomed to seeing us. To me this restaurant isn’t so much about the food but about the comforting family feeling I get walking in there. Every time I come back, since I moved, they always ask about family and how we are all doing.
There are many restaurants in NYC that have many different names, sometimes those names reference where the store owners are from or something about they’re culture. In Brooklyn there are many pizza parlors named Marios, Joe’s, and Luigi’s pizza, these names are normal for Italian people so based off of the name you could tell these people are from Italy. Also, they often name the stores after something from they’re home or something they hold dear to themselves.
In my past, i have been to a lot of desi restaurants with my family and relatives. However, as i am getting older we would only go to restaurants when their is a special occasion coming up. For Example, in Eid we would go shopping to buy new clothes in a place called Jackson Heights. After we were done buying things we would eat as a family in a restaurant called “Khaabar Baari”. This place would always bring me a certain feeling as it reminds me that i am starting a new life in the occasion of Eid and that my family and I are always busy and don’t have the opportunity to connect as much in the house, but whenever we are here it, gives us the opportunity to connect and bond better as a family.
There’s a restaurant in Yonkers, it’s called Carida Restaurant. It’s a dominican restaurant and every time I go there to eat, I feel like I am at the Bronx with this feeling of comfort. They always take order in Spanish with great attitude and makes you feel like you’re family. When my parents were divorced and it was my dad’s turn to take care of my brother and I, he would always takes us to a dominican restaurant and everyone knew him. They knew me and treated me as family.
