Welcome to ENG 2100: Writing I!
In this class, we are going to further develop your expertise as a reader and writer in ways that consider your identity and your goals, a growing awareness of how language and rhetoric make the world, and how writing can help you make knowledge and learn across various contexts and uses.
It is going to feel like a mess at times, partially because it is writing but also partially because times are hard now.
But we will keep writing, and reading, and writing, and reading, and working together so our writing, at the very least, feels less and less messy over time.
One of the cool things about writing is that the possibilities are nearly endless for what you could produce. Every single one of you is going to do awesome things in this class and it will be a surprise each time. I’m excited to read your work!
Sincerely,
Dan Libertz
We will use this website for:
#1 Course Schedule
You will probably find yourself using this website most often for checking the course schedule. There may be times when I have to change the schedule, so please check it periodically. You will find information about what we will do each class, a link to the lesson plan (when it is ready) or learning module (ditto) for each day, and what readings and/or assignments are due each day. You can get to the schedule by clicking “Course Schedule” on the menu bar.
#2 Lesson Plans and Learning Modules
On the Course Schedule, as mentioned above, there are links to lesson plans and learning modules. The lesson plans are for you to follow along when we are in synchronous class sessions on Discord. The learning modules are asynchronous modules for you to complete related to course content–these replace our Wednesday meeting times and give you practice to learn course content and work on your projects. Early on in the semester, I will show you what I expect for both of these items on this website.
#3 Writing and Reading Posts
Some assignments will require you to write and read posts directly on this website. Early on in the semester, I will show you how to write and read posts in WordPress, so don’t worry if you are not familiar with how to do that now. On the menu bar, you can click “Posts” to see all posts written.
#4 Resources and Information
There are also a collection of resources and information on this website. There is the syllabus (pdf on Blackboard, though), there are links to resources related to writing and language under “Writing/Language Resources,” and there are resources related to Baruch College and living in NYC in general under “Community Resources.” Throughout the semester, I may create new pages or link to other information that could be helpful, as well.
Aside from this website, we will also use Discord, our course textbook, Blackboard, Baruch email, and a phone number (for emergencies) to communicate and coordinate. See syllabus for more information (you can get syllabus from this website, but one on Blackboard has my Google Voice phone number). |
