Rounds Prompt on Challenges at End of Semester (20-30 min)
We have about 5 weeks until you turn in your last assignments. That might sound like a lot of time–it isn’t! It will go fast. Especially if there is still a good amount of writing to complete.
Take about 2 minutes and think about a response to the following question:
-What is a challenge you are dealing with right now during these last 5 weeks or something that has helped you in the past that you think will help during these last 5 weeks?
It can be about anything: getting writing done, staying focused, finding time to work, or anything not related to school.
We will follow this pattern:
-I will spin the wheel of names to get started.
-The person it lands on will share their thoughts responding to the prompt or they will “pass”
-That person will choose another person to go
Writing with Sources (20-30 min)
Please, please, please look over Learning Module 8 if you have not completed it. It will help you write your research paper: Learning Module 8 Landing Page – ENG 2100: Writing I, Spring 2021 (cuny.edu). The textbook readings due last week and the week before (as well as Learning Module 7 before that) are also helpful.
Let’s look at three examples from the paper by fellow Baruch student Suhaib Qasim to talk about approaches to direct quoting and paraphrasing:
- Immigrant contributions to the greater job economy by way of large-scale entrepreneurship are also immense. According to a study done by George Mason University, “Among startup companies that were valued at more than $1 billion in 2016, half were founded by immigrants. Among Fortune 500 companies, 40 percent were founded by immigrants or their children” (Griswold, “The Benefits of Immigration”). Instead of being accused of stealing jobs, immigrant populations ought to be credited with the creation of millions of jobs.
- In light of the global economy’s rapid expansion, many business experts express the need for matched growth, and the most essential factor in this growth is the interconnectedness of the business world (Goldin et al.). As a country opens its borders to immigrants, it allows for the influx and integration of numerous cultures, enriching business with the experience necessary to interact and deal with people of different cultural backgrounds.
- The United States is not alone in its dependence on immigrants for economic prosperity, and can learn lessons from the consequences of strict immigration policies abroad. Jason Furman, Harvard professor of economic policy and former chairman of Barack Obama’s economic advisors, believes Japan’s harsh stance on immigration has caused its economic instability, concluding that “immigration makes a strong contribution to economic growth” (Furman).
Activity 1
Turn the quotes from #1 or #3 into paraphrase. Share what you did in the text channel for today.
Activity 2
Choose a paragraph from a page I assign you.
Using definitions, functions, and tips about paraphrasing and quoting here, choose a quote or paraphrase from the chapter and explain why it works well as is or how it can be changed to be improved.
Reflective Annotated Bibliography (10-15 min)
Let’s check in on this. This page from Learning Module 8 is helpful on thinking about academic vs. popular sources: Reflective Annotated Bibliography – ENG 2100: Writing I, Spring 2021 (cuny.edu)
Let’s take some time in class to work on it and let me know if you have questions as you work.
Next Time
-No Learning Module this week. Please catch up on work a little bit, if you need to.
-Reflective Annotated Bibliography due this week
-On 4/26, I’m asking you to share a paragraph from your in-progress Research Project so we can get more practice writing with sources prior to the draft of the Research Project that is due on May 3.
