I have had mixed experiences with research papers, sometimes I enjoyed writing a research paper, and most times I didn’t. I hate writing research papers about topics that don’t interest me or don’t challenge me intellectually. I’d be proud of finishing a paper that I didn’t enjoy writing because it’s torture for me to write something I’m not interested in. I sometimes felt proud of writing a paper that I was interested in and I also haven’t when I felt like the time-constrained me from writing the best paper possible. However, I enjoy writing research papers that interest me and push me to learn more and ask more questions and take something with me into my everyday life.
Let’s make sure you choose a topic that interests you then, Elijah! The last thing that I want for you is for this to feel like torture.
I don’t think I wrote a research paper before, but I think it is the same structure. From my search online, I know that research paper is a long paper, and it has five main parts, which are introduction, review of literature, method, results, and discussion. However, we should always start with a general sentence that introduces the background of the topic. Then narrow down in one or two sentences to the thesis. I think it is hard, that’s why you give us more time on this.
Jia, I love that you made this effort to research what a research paper is! Your paper will not include each of those parts, but it will (likely) be longer than the other papers that you’ve written in this class.
I did not write a research paper before, However, I hope it is similar with the types of essays that I did before so that it will be easier for me to complete the assignment. I think the important part of this paper is to research in deep about some topic also include good information in our essay in order to be easy to understand and reliable.
You never wrote a research paper in high school, Daniela? You are write in that when you write a research paper, you research something deeply.
I think I have not written any research paper before. I am interested in writing one, I believe it can be something new I can learn as well. However, it might have some cons as gathering all the info I need and put into context. With Professor Corva’s skills, he will teach the class and I skills we can use in order to build our research paper, I think.
I appreciate the vow of confidence, Derek! I will do my best to help you in the process.
My experience writing a research paper at the beginning was difficult due to my lack on the English language, and the idea of writing so much in it made me feel exhausted. However, I am actually thankful to the high school I went to because they helped me go through the research paper step by step, even though the process was hard. In another hand, I was proud of one research paper that I did in high school, which I wrote when I was taking the English regents exam for the 5th time (English was killing me, metaphorically speaking), and I passed it because of all the reading and writing.
One tip given to me in high school (that I can recall) was that when we think of a research paper, we should see it as if it is in TEXAS form of writing. The “T” for topic sentence, the “E” for extended topic sentence, the “X” for evidence/example, the “A” for analysis, and lastly, the “S” for summery. This idea made past my regents. I’ve to use it for my other classes too.
Laura, I speak English as my first language and I still feel exhausted when I write research papers. I will help you through it, though.
I’ve never heard of this TEXAS method, but it seems like a good one!
I also think that college research papers are going to be different from the ones I’ve written before, so I am looking forward to learning new tips and strategies.
My experience writing research papers has not been so great. To get my biliteracy seal on my high school diploma, I needed to complete different tasks in English and Spanish. One of the tasks was writing a research paper, and I wouldn’t say I liked the process, especially when I needed to include images and graphs since interpreting visuals is sometimes tricky for me. However, I was proud I did such a time-consuming and tedious paper because I got my biliteracy seal. Every time you finish something “hard,” the feeling is different.
I’ve never heard of a “biliteracy seal”, Erika, but it sounds like you had to put some hard work in to get it. Writing a research paper is time consuming, but if you choose a topic that you are interested in to write about, it can also be rewarding.
Personally I really suffered with this paper. I haven’t written any before and this one was a major obstacle. The reason I hated the process of writing it is because I had big troubles with differentiating ethos and logos. I don’t know if I am proud of paper because with this one I can’t find the perfection of it. I don’t believe it can be so good. I think I still have time and will try my best to reach perfection and write best paper even if I never did write similar before!
How have you really suffered with this paper if you haven’t written one before?! It seems that you mean you suffered with the rhetorical analysis paper.
We often suffer when we seek perfection. Instead, just trying making it good!
yeah I am sorry mistaken it, i wrote the research paper before and it was a horrible experience because it was a major jump from a regular essay to it. For me it was too much and I could not handle it at that time. I felt horrible was not proud of it, since I believe there Is so much more to find about topic and u never can get enough. for me it was challenging in a way to write a paper with no my opinion using facts without plagiarism.
I have written two research papers before. I had a horrible experience with the process of writing the paper because I had to look for the credibility of more than 50 sources and the papers were very lengthy compared to the papers that I had written before. I did feel a little bit proud of myself but more than that I felt relieved that the paper was over since it caused me so much stress. Firstly, you need to develop a research question that is narrowed down to a specific field. Some other techniques that I learned in my writing process were that the information needs to connect to a specific discipline. You need to use methodologies in order to conduct your research; also make hypothesis, state the results, the gaps/limitations and the future research. Lastly, I had to establish my own credibility using other sources and to find the credibility of those sources I used PAARC, (Purpose, Accuracy, Authority, Relevance and Currency).
Sadika, it sounds like you have written some intense research papers in the past. I don’t think we will go as deep as you have in the past (which I hope is comforting to you), but we will still go fairly deep.
I haven’t heard of this PAARC method, but I am interested in learning more about it.
I have written research papers before. I hate the process of writing the research paper because it needs too much time for me to find resources to make sure the information I found is actually valid. I will be proud of myself once I finished it because the process was suffering and stressful, it really needs time and patient to finish it with a good grade. Therefore, I should reward myself for went through the whole process.
Rongxin, I can relate. Research papers can be very difficult to write. Choosing a topic that you are very interested in might help to alleviate some of the pain.
I was always a fan of writing papers in general. One thing I do struggle with is the the time management to do them. However, writing was always a fun activity for me, especially when the topic was something I enjoyed speaking or writing about. Although I always overthink what I write, I still end up doing the assignment regardless of my struggles. Research papers include a lot of time and thinking, two things I normally hate to do. The process of writing one isn’t difficult for me, it’s the process of actually choosing a topic to write on.
