Logos
- “ They say that in 190p there were 3,500 Negro doctors in America . In 1960 there were 3,900, an increase of 400. Is this because there were no opportunities? No, they say”. William Buckley uses logos in this example to further his point that “Negros” are in fact included in America. He uses the data above to make it seem as if the Africans Americans are not taking advantage of what America is already offering them.
- “ It is the cas Ethan seven-tenths of the average white’s income in the United States is equal to the entire income of the average Negro. But my great-grandparents worked hard. I do not know of anything which has ever been created without the expense of something”. William Buckley uses logos which is the difference in salary between white and black people back in 1965 to justify his point. He uses the value above to show that the difference in salary was earned by his ancestors and that it’s “rightly” theirs.
Ethos
- “ I know from your faces that your share with me a feeling of compassion and a feeling of outrage that this kind of thing should have happened. How are we going t avoid the kind of humiliations which are visited perpetually upon members of the minority race?” William Buckley uses the example to appeal to the emotion of the audience, which in this case is predominantly white. He is assuming that the audience shares the same feelings he does about Baldwin’s past. This makes his argument “relatable” and might even make the audience feel understood.
- “For one thing I believe that the fundamental trend in the United States is to the good nature, the generosity and good wishes, the decency that do lie in the spirit of the American people”. In this example William Buckley uses ethos to praise the “American people (mostly referring to white people )” which in this case would them feel good, maybe even feel a sense of joy for being talked about like this. This helps him seamlessly transition into his next point about how they can’t allow themselves to be told the opposite by the minority.
Pathos
- “ I challenge you to name me another civilization in the history of the world in which the problems of the minority, which have been showing considerable material and political advancement, are as much a subject of dramatic concern as in the United States”. In this example William Buckley uses pathos uses pathos to make himself seem more credible. He uses the advancement made in America to show that this minority is in fact prospering directly opposing Baldwin’s argument.
