During this semester, we’ll study four methods of rhetorical analysis:

  1. Rhetorical Context Questions
  2. Explicit/Implicit/Extended Meaning:
    1. The explicit level of analysis refers to what happens — the action or plot of a story, the surface-level meaning of a text or other artifact.
    2. The implicit level of analysis refers to the meaning that underlies what happens. What is implied or hidden? What significance lies behind the surface?
    3. The extended meaning refers to the larger context. How does this artifact function, what purpose does it serve or meaning does it hold, in its context?
  3. The Toulmin Method
  4. Ethos/Pathos/Logos
