Displacement

http://m.huffpost.com/us/entry/us_58ff6e9ee4b047ce3ee27c57

Under Donald Trump’s administration it continues to attacks on immigrant and refugee families. Raids on immigrant families are escalating. Mothers who have been here in the u.s for over a decade have been sent away from their children. Immigrants with legal status have been unlawfully detained.
Also due to many changes following his administration it is becoming harder to pay for doctors when we are sick and to get healthcare for the poor and those unable to receive treatment. The displacement was that before Donald trump’s administrations not all the time is there police trying to hunt down the illegal or legal immigrants is but now you can see on news that immigrants were being sent away one after another . I heard about families being torn apart and forced to leave the u.s even after they have settle in the place for years. With his new policy many will be left with no healthcare especially to the poor. This will affect thousands of people with no way to go to the doctor or hospital for treatment. This will also cause fear and tension among the immigrants because they are afraid of being sent back to where they came from. People come to the United States for opportunity and jobs as well as freedom. Many of these immigrants came here for a living but now they were being of forced to leave this place, the place where they decides to spent their life with their family.

Pop Culture

In Cinderella 2 Dreams come true, the displacement was when Cinderella have to obey the rules and learn to become a real princess. She has never been in a situation where she needs to learn all the skills of what a princess is like. All her life she has been working as a servant for her step sister and step mother. She did all the house chores and cooking while now as a royalty she is not allowed to do what she wants. Cinderella had difficulty trying to assimilate to her new environment in the castle. The way she chooses to dress was denied because it is not what a princess should wear. Her taste in food and style was different and she is not allowed to meet with her commoner friends. After failing the training to adapt and understand what a princess should do, she then notices that she is not who she is if she obeys the rules. In the end, in her own ways and being her true self she still was able to manage the banquet just by being who she is.

ART-A-THON Experience

I went to the event on How to read a sonnet. At first, I thought the event would be boring because it is about poetry. I am not good with poems and I often do not enjoy reading them. To me, poems are all riddles and you have to find out what the author is actually trying to tell the readers. I do not know much about poems but today I learn what a sonnet is. A sonnet in poetry usually tells a story and has rhymes. It has 14 lines and 10 syllables. The one we read in the class is Shakespeare sonnet 20. I have no idea what the sonnet is about when I first read it. In the class we discuss sonnet having 10 syllables, however, in this sonnet, it has 11 syllables in each line. There was an extra syllable in which it was weird. Professor Kolb says that a rhyme has genders; feminine and masculine. From the sonnet, every rhyme is feminine because it has two or more syllables. I thought the sonnet is about a woman but in the end, it was not. We discuss the meaning of the first 8 line which is mostly praising that person’s beauty. The author is telling us that the person is a woman but also not like a woman. So far, the gender of that person is ambiguous. In the next 4 line, we all figure out that the person is a man. The clue is that in this sonnet nature is a “she” and straight, so in the creation, she has an affection for it and therefore she added one extra thing. This tells us that, that extra thing made the person a man. The author says that in the last 2 line that he can be with all the women but still love him.Now going back to the 11 syllables the reason for that extra syllables is the one extra thing added to the person. It was a really interesting sonnet and the story behind it was just like a surprise. I thought I would not enjoy this event but in the end, it was really fun. The idea of searching for the meaning behind this sonnet was a great experience. It was also funny in how in the end we figured out that it was a “he”. Before coming to the event I had thought about leaving once it gets boring but instead, I stay to the end.

Mother Tongue

Amy Tan’s story about her mother’s broken English and having to pretend that she is her on the phone is quite common in the family that I lived in. My mother have experience the same thing that Amy Tan’s mother have experience. Whether it is on the phone, department stores and hospital they do not treat my mother’s issue seriously or give her good service. I remember the time that when my mother first time put me on the phone to pretend that I was her. It was not a good experience because to me it felt weird. The fact is that I am not her and having to pretend that I was gives me pressure and uneasiness. But the thing is whenever I was on the phone they would offer new service and opportunities, on the other hand, my mother receive none. It’s like your done and hang up. The reason for that was easy to figure out they do not want to spend time talking to someone who do not know how to speak English. Over the time I understand that knowing how to speak in English gives people more advantage. Allowing people to get opportunities and better service. Even now I still rejected being put on the phone to translate and just wish someone would take the place.
