In Finding Nemo, A young fish named Nemo is taken away from his father by humans. Nemo is taken to a dentist office in 42 wallaby way, Sydney where he is placed in a fish tank. Nemo’s displacement is from being in the one ocean to being placed in a closed space like the fish tank. For the time that he is in the fish tank Nemo has to learn his environment and get to know these new fishes. Although it seems scary to Nemo at first he eventually gets to know the other fish and is accepted into the tank by being given the nickname “shark bait”.

Mulan

In Mulan we find that Mulan, a young girl, has to take the place of her sick father in the military. She has to disguise herself as a man as only men are allowed to fight in the military. This is a classic example of displacement. She has to somehow keep her cover as a man in order to help her sick father. She has to constantly prove herself in a trade dominated by men. Mulan endures physical challenges that she never would have imagined that she had to go through. In this her situation she is a fish out of water and has to learn to adapt to a completely new environment.

Tupac

Tupac is one of the most influential artists in pop culture. Even though he died more than 20 years ago his music is still relevant today. One of his famous songs is “me against the world” and I feel like it captures the essence of displacement. Tupac Shakur grew up in the streets if California. When he rose to fame with his rap career he mostly spoke about the people in poverty will always stay poor, while the rich get richer. This is where Tupac feels displacement because even though he rose to fame and became wealthy he still cared about the people who were destitute. He couldn’t relate with the upper-class people of society because they didn’t care about what happens to those in need. Those in social media and politicians claim to care about the lower-class, but in reality, they don’t care what happens to them. Tupac’s music is aimed towards the people in poverty and makes the people aware of what’s going on in the world.

Pop Culture

In Cinderella 2 Dreams come true, the displacement was when Cinderella have to obey the rules and learn to become a real princess. She has never been in a situation where she needs to learn all the skills of what a princess is like. All her life she has been working as a servant for her step sister and step mother. She did all the house chores and cooking while now as a royalty she is not allowed to do what she wants. Cinderella had difficulty trying to assimilate to her new environment in the castle. The way she chooses to dress was denied because it is not what a princess should wear. Her taste in food and style was different and she is not allowed to meet with her commoner friends. After failing the training to adapt and understand what a princess should do, she then notices that she is not who she is if she obeys the rules. In the end, in her own ways and being her true self she still was able to manage the banquet just by being who she is.

Pretty Woman (HW)

In Pretty Woman, Vivian Ward, who is a former prostitute, becomes an escort for a welathy, busniness man named Edward Lewis. In this specific scene, Vivian starts engaging into Edward’s elite world by going shopping around Beverly Hills. However, during her shopping, she encounters women who approach her in a rude way;throwing subliminal messages about her revealing outfit. They mention that the clothes sold there are not  appropaite for her and that they are too expensive for her tatse. Because she lives a life where her only occupation is based on prostituion, she is unaware of this new culture of elitism and therefore, feels disrespected. In fact, in this scene there is a sense of elegance that Vivian does not portray, like the way she speaks in contrast to the workers: “ya got nice stuff.” She also sees the differences by stating that she is looking for more conservative things, which is also contrast to her current style she wears. Throughout the movie she learns how to confrom to the “fancy” standards and become more “formal”, but along the way she faces challenges and insults like the women in this scene.

The Princess Diaries

In The Princess Diaries, Mia an average girl from San Francisco discovers that her father was the Prince of Genovia and she is heir to the throne.  Her grandmother makes her take classes on manners and how a princess should act. This is all a surprise for Mia, who needs to adapt to her new role.  This movie relates to The Fresh Prince because he also experiences a difference in socioeconomic class. The Princess Diaries relates to the Superman and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt in that they must adapt to their surroundings. They must learn how to act in front of the others.  Mia is a character who  wasn’t popular in school but when her classmates find out she becomes the center of attention.  Additionally, Mia undergoes a makeover which basically changes her exterior look and becomes more princess like.  Her biggest conflict is not knowing if she should accept becoming a Princess and accept the new responsibilities this comes with.

Popular Culture: Reign

In the show Reign, Mary becomes the queen of Scotland at six years old. She is put into an engagement to the prince of France at an even younger age. Due to political/ religious conflict in Scotland Mary’s mother sends her to live in a nunnery in France to keep her safe. Years later, Mary had to leave the nunnery because someone attempted to poison her. In the clip I posted bellow, Mary is arriving at the french court and seeing her future husband for the first time since they were little kids. This relates to the clips we watched in class of Superman, Unbreakable and The Fresh Prince of Bel Air because she is new to the French court and now is expected to live out the rest of her live there. However, Mary is a “fish out of water” because she is a Scot and as the queen of Scotland she must always put the needs of her country before all else. This makes her completely different from those around her because they are all French, including her fiance, therefore they must put the needs of France before all else. Mary struggles to assimilate with the French needs. However, because she is a royal after some time she is able to accustom herself to their lifestyle.

Gossip Girls displacement

In Gossip Girls all of the main characters come from wealthy families and live  in the upper east side and go to a prestiguous high school because of the money their parents have saved up for them. They do not have to work hard to go to Ivy leaugue schoos as well because of their family name. That was not the case for Dan one of the main characters Dan was not like the rest of the characters he came from lower Manhattan and wen to the high school because of his hard work and recieved a scholarship. He was dispacled because he was the “poor” kid no one knew trying to find a way to get used to the change and that is why he created gossip girl.It was his way to get accumstomed to the upper east side.He had to learn how to keep up with the scandals and dramas even though he came from a simple life and then entered a world full of somebodies when he considered himself a nobody.

GET OUT

In this movie, Chris who is a colored man was dating a white woman. In the beginning of the movie, Chris feels uncomfortable with the idea of meeting his girl’s parents because he’s black. At first, he felt comfortable meeting his girlfriend’s parents because they made him feel welcome. He started feeling displaced when he saw that the house maid and the gardener were black. Later on, the whole community had a get together to see if they want a bid on him, but Chris just thought it was a get together. He felt something was strange because the house maid and gardener was acting weird. Throughout the movie, Chris was trying to get out of the parent’s house because he felt displaced.

Phil of the Future

Phil of the Future

In this TV series, the main character, Phil, and his family, time travels from the future and they get stuck in the 21st century, because their time machine malfunctions. Whiles Phil’s dad tries to fix the time machine, Phil and sister is forced to go to school and try to “blend in” with the “normal” children their age. This show fits the same theme as The Fresh Prince and Superman because, the main characters are trying to hid their secret and also trying to “fit in.”
