1) What is the relationship between Dina and her father? Why does she seemingly dislike him? Does her apparent mistrust root from the experiences she’s had with her father?
2) What is the relationship between Dina and her mother when compared with the relationship with her father?
3) What is Heidi’s significance in the story? What role does she play?
1) The relationship between Diana and her father is very weak. The way Diana explains it makes it sound like her dad does not truly do anything that would qualify him to have the title “father.” She seems to dislike him because he wasn’t really the father figure she wanted in her life. He failed to provide for the family financially and emotionally. I believe this is the root of her mistrust of others because she’s afraid that if she gets close to others they’ll end up hurting/ disappointing her like her father.
2) When compared to her relationship with her father, Dina’s relationship with her mother had much more love. Diana’s relationship with her mom had more of a sentimental bond. It’s as though Diana felt sympathy toward her mother. The both had a bond because they both had to struggle with the father.
3) Heidi’s significance in the story is that she’s the first person to make Diana go out of her comfort zone in college. Without Heidi it’s likely that Diana would keep herself isolated. The role Heidi plays in this story is that she gets the plot moving around. Without Heidi I don’t think there would be much of a story. There most likely wouldn’t be much of a plot movement because Diana would just stay in her room the whole time.
