Food Memory – Kaylen Zapata

As a first generation American daughter to immigrant parents, any milestone is important and celebrated in our home. Especially graduation. My high school graduation just happened to fall in 2020, during a global pandemic which led the world to shut down. Since I was only going to have a virtual graduation, my mother decided that she was going to do the most she could in our home, she decorated our home so beautifully and cooked a feast with all of my favorite food. While she was planning she asked me to tell her all I wanted to eat at my graduation celebration and to be very honest, I’m a picky eater. I couldn’t really think of anything else but lasagna from my favorite restaurant FUMOS. Due to a worker having covid, the restaurant shut down during the whole month of June, leaving us without the option of ordering take out. Instead of my mom viewing this situation as an obstacle she took it as a challenge and told me she was about to make me the best lasagna I had ever had.

The day of my graduation comes and I hear my mom up and early in the kitchen. The sweet smell of blueberry muffins woke me up. My mom had baked muffins as I was sleeping so I could wake up and have my favorite breakfast. That day my mother acted as a wonder woman, she cooked, and decorated our home so beautifully and made me feel like the most special girl in the world. Once it was time to eat, my mom served everyone and told me she hoped I liked what she made. I tried it and it was the most delicious lasagna I have ever had. It was amazing. It was so cheesy, so stuffed and well done I’ll choose my mother’s lasagna over FUMOS’ any day.

  1. I really liked your food memeory in many ways I was able to connect to it. Something I really liked and was able to connect with was the love for lasgna, specially a good one. Just like you I would prefer my moms lasagna over any other. Also I liked how you incorporated some of your background into the story. I as well liked the way you described what your mom did for you for such a special event just like you I could connect with the virtual graduation as well. I think something you could have started with to make the story stronger was with the smell of baked muffens you woke up to, so like probably you could have started of with the second paragraph and then the first. I wonder if you could have went more into description of what you felt when you first saw the lasagna or when you first tasted to give the reader more of a vivid view of what you felt.

  2. Hi Kaylen, I really liked how explained the situation before the food memory. I also really liked how you used a simile when comparing your mom to wonder woman. I like how your mom decorated the house and planned to cook for you. I thought it was really sweet of her. It reminded me of how my mom also organized a celebration for my graduation. My questions are: How can you vividly describe the setting? How did you feel after the lasagna.

  3. Hi Kaylen,
I loved reading your food memory. I liked how you mentioned that even through a pandemic, your mom was able to make you feel special. I also liked how you mentioned specific details, like your favorite restaurant. I was able to connect with your story because my graduation was also held virtually. A question I have is how did you feel when your mom told you she was making lasagna? Another question I have is what were your emotions and thoughts while you took the first bite of your mom’s lasagna?
