The animated youtube video called “Asian food” by Domics is a storytime video that recalls small memories Domics had when he was in elementary school. Domics has always been the type of person that would never last in one school for more than a year due to his father’s job of being a good engineering. He would move very often and it was hard for him to make friends. However, in this video, he specifically talks about when he used to live in Wyoming. Domics used to originally live in the Philippines where most people were well Filipino. Therefore, he wasn’t used to seeing people from different races. Which he mentions in his video he mentioned how he noticed that people looked and acted differently compared to him. One of the main differences he noticed was the food he used to bring. He noticed that the food he would bring would seem more like a meal since he would bring rice and adobo while other students would bring a Lunchable. He found it kinda funny that people would really get filled up by 2 crackers a slice of cheese and ham. He also mentioned that he began to feel weird when he brought his food. Since some of the food, he would bring would look like typical American treats and people would ask him for some. However, when they would try the food it would not taste like what they expected and they would say “ew” and spit out the food.

I understand how Domics was feeling because I used to live in a predominantly white neighborhood. Which caused me to feel like I was different and I couldn’t fit in. The way I dress acted, and the things I ate were completely different. When I used to be younger my mom would pack me some rice with chicken. Although it wasn’t something completely different people would look at me weird because many would rather get the cafeteria food or McDonald’s. At the moment I felt like I could not really show my culture to others because I did not want them to judge me. However, as I grew older I went into more diverse schools. Where I still didn’t express myself but I knew that many people there were Mexican as well. It made me feel more secure especially when I would talk to them about similar experiences.

I definitely recommend watching Domics videos when you want a distraction or you are bored of watching the same old cartoons. His animations have always been very relatable and he is quite funny dude. Therefore, check him out whenever you need a video to smile.

  1. I think this story is one that many people can relate to. Children so often have a hard time when they feel like something about them is “different.”

  2. Hey Sydney, I love the analysis you provided. I can relate to having food that was a bit different from American food. I have memories of bringing snacks or food that was not store-bought and feeling weird from everyone else who did. I definitely understand where you are coming from on this experience.
