I hate going to the MET but for some reason I end up going there each year for the past five years. This time it was no different the experience was dreadful, but since the project required it I abided by it. One of the many reasons that I hate the Met is because it’s not easy to navigate and I hate asking for directions. But I swallowed up my pride and asked for the direction to the modern and contemporary art. As the directions stated I went through the roman art made a right to the African art and going through the whole exabit it was at the very end of the first floor. After I finally arrived at the destination and started looking around nothing seemed quite impressive which was odd because it was packed with visitors. I arrived front of the black iris and started looking at mainly because it was one of the few paintings there that didn’t had people crowding it.

The work I decided to look at was Black Iris III by Georgia O’ Keeffe. The painting dates back to 1926 and is an oil painting. It shows a magnified image of a flower, with all of its dimensions enlarged far beyond its original realize proportions. Since the picture is almost as if it zoomed in, she puts great attention to the details which captures the attention of her audience and which was the other main reason why I was drawn in by this work of art. She emphasizes on type of detail that could be easily overlooked at a first glance, which could be her reason for drawing this piece out of proportion to such size. She wanted to draw attention and make her audience see the flower from her eyes. How she perceived it. So the viewer who wouldn’t take second glance at a flower is drawn in to take a closer look.

O’Keeffe is one of the most significant artists of the twentieth century who had iconic contribution to American modernism. She was born on November 15, 1877 and was the second of seven children. She grew up on a farm near Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. She studied at Art institute of Chicago from 1905 to 1906 and the Art Students League in New York from 1907 to 1908. There she learned the techniques of traditional realist painting. But the greatest influence on her as an artist came from Arthur Wesley Dow. It was his revolutionary ideas that made her one of the very first American artists the practiced pure abstraction. (okeeffemuseum.org).

One can say before the 19thcentury art lacked imagination, which was introduced to the world of art in terms of modern art. Modernism challenged the traditional way of thinking and depicting art as you see in the real world. They started drawing from their imagination, how they perceive the world not simply see. Thus, we get themes like abstraction, impressionism, expressionism, cubism, and surrealism. These are not natural rather unnatural way of viewing the world. We see this in Black Iris III by O’Keeffe as natural flower is painted out of proportion way larger than its original size. Showcasing the them abstraction and impressionism. Who knew what she originally intended for her audience to perceive but it does a great job in cultivating their attention.

One question is why flower petals because I see them reoccurring in her other works as well.

Rabindernath Tagore

Our story unfolds in a rural village of modern-day Bangladesh. It follows two brother’s Dukhiram and Chidam, who are hardworking farmers, while their wives Radha and Chandra stay at home and take care of the house. Long story short, Dukhiram kills his wife because he was frustrated with working hard all day and coming home to unhappy and dissatisfied life. He freaked out and didn’t know what to do. His brother stepped him and blamed everything on his wife Radha and told her he would save her somehow. However, Radha still having her pride refused to be treated as pawns to her husband and confessed to everything.

Looking at it from a western perspective this story might seem far-fetched from reality but this not as uncommon in India. County in which in most households’ men are the ones earning living and women are expected to stay at home and do what is expected of her. Taking care of the house, bearing children and cooking. They are not granted as much freedom that men enjoy. Thus, the issues described in this story are still a cause on concern in today’s world.

Since I grew up in India, I have first-hand witnessed this discrimination towards women, especially in the household. They are not given voice and their opinions don’t carry any weight. There was also this custom that women would have to cover their head and face in the company of other men. So, they would literally disappear from society. This says a lot about this culture that is designed by men to oppress women. Although, Tagore was taking about this time period in late 19thcentury, we san presume that in other parts of the world such problems still exist.

Response to Tartuffe

Describe the character of Orgon. Why do you think he’s so vulnerable to Tartuffe?

Orgon is an extremely proud and an egocentric leader of his household. He is the one making decisions for the rest of his family. He is blind to reason and makes quick rash decisions. Such men are easily fooled or deceived by fast talking men who appease to their reasoning. Since Orgon is a self centered person he is blinded to those around him, which makes him vulnerable to deceive. Tartuffe on the other hand is the exact opposite, who isn’t proud and prey on such men. Since Orgon was self centered it was easier for Tartuffe to divide him from his family. So he wouldn’t listen to their reasoning or accusations. He was the type of leader that would cause harm to his public on a whim of a higher authority. Which was what author was criticizing, the relationship between the king and the church. Blind faith could lead to disasters, which is immune to reason. All of actions were focused or had sole purpose of appeasing Tartuffe. At the end when he found out the truth, he was outraged and blamed the all the priests in the world. Its like he went from on end of the spectrum to another, to which his brother in law recommend practicing moderation. He went from blind faith to this blind rage, in both he still lack the ability to see reason. Thus, he was a guy consumed by his own pride that he lacked aptitude to reason which showed his venerability. Due to these traits he was easily tricked by Tartuffe who played on his ego and separated him from the rest of the family and used him to do his bidding.

Intro

Hi Class,

My name is Kulvir Singh and I’m a sophomore here at Baruch. I was born in India and came to America in 2009. My parents wanted better education career opportunities for me and my sister, which is why they decided to move to America. I was never sure what I wanted to be in life, however I knew I wanted to be in a business field which is why I attended a business orientated high school.

I went to the high school of Economics and Finance. Its a unique school with business orientated mindset. School’s key focus was to ready the students for careers and office environment. The school provided many opportunities such as workshops and internships. I ended up growing a lot as a business professional in that school. My interest in the business sector also peeked and I ended up coming to Baruch college for further studies.

When I first arrived at Baruch I didn’t really like the campus and I wanted to transfer. I was looking at other colleges with great outdoor campus, and almost all of my friends went upstate or out of state. But after certain time the thought of transferring became unthinkable and I ended up staying. My life had adjusted to the life in Baruch and the friends I made here. I use to feel stuck here but now there is no where else that I feel more alive. If you want to be happy surround yourself with people who have similar goals and mindset as you. This is how it is in Baruch, most of the students have same major as me and similar goals. I’m looking forward to working with all of you.

Feng Menglong

Lia Jia is a coward and easily manipulated man. He doesn’t think anything threw and doesn’t have a clear picture of his future. Even when his wife constantly asks him of how he depicts their future together, he doesn’t give her a clear answer. He couldn’t come up with money by himself and had gotten help from many people throughout his journey. He ends up relying on every person he meets and doesn’t really have anything to offer. So it did not surprise me that in the end he ended up loosing his wife and her treasures. He was a coward who could’t stand up to his father and face the truth. His situation was to his deserving and my only regret is the his wife “tenth” deserved better.
