MOMA

The work I chose is call “Dive Bomber and Tank” by jose clemente orozco, painted in 1940, he is a Mexican painter, who specialized in political murals. The first time I saw this mural, the first word come to my mind was cool, though I did not know what is that. “This is six-panel fresco ,depicts abstracted elements of mechanical warfare, including the tail and wings of a bomber, tanktreads, and chains。as well as a pair of upturned human legs.” In the middle of fresco, we can see there have three metal faces, each of their faces have many chains and nails. on the left side of the face were surrounded by chains, and nails going to his eyes. on the middle side of the face have chains in his month and on the right side of the face have chains in his ear and nose and three lags on his head. According to this work’s title and time. I think orozco draw this work is to satirize the government., people in the world war II, people losing ability to see the truth, losing their right to speak and no able to hear the truth. People living in the war can only be a victim of war, like these three legs, the people may die in tanks and bombers attack at any time, and become these three legs. though, Orozco insisted it had “no political significance.” He stated, “I simply paint the life that is going on at the present—what we are and what the world is at this moment. That is what modern art is.”

Manifestos And Radicalism

Both Black Panther Party Platform and SCUM Manifesto uses radical language can directly let audience knows what he wants to say, and what is his point. Adding the radical language to the manifests allows the audience to know their thoughts clearly and easily enter the supporters’ hearts, it can let the people that original does not support him or people who do not know him going to support him. However, use radical language has some disadvantages, like the presidential election, the presidential candidate will use some radical language to make his followers and centrist people to continue support him. But, If the speech is discriminatory, the result is that people who disagree with him will continue to disagree him, and the followers and centrist who dissatisfied of his speech will may not continue to support him. In the Black Panther Party Platform, they use ten points and brief reasons to make us very clear know their claims, they use radical language to make it easier for us to feel the helplessness and despair of the blacks, so it can let most of us start going to support their points. But, in Valerie Solana’s “Scum Declaration”, her article is full of words that despise and hate men. Like “Being completely self-centered and unable to relate to anything outside himself, the male’s conversation’, when not about himself, is an impersonal droning on, removed from anything of human value. (SCUM) and “The male is completely egocentric, trapped inside himself, incapable of empathizing or identifying with others, or love, friendship, affection of tenderness.” (SCUM) Although this can get part of the support of women, but, when men read this article, Valerie will lose the support of these men, men will not support her anymore.

Family Romance

In Freud’s Family Romance, although I do not agree with some of his ideas, but I agree his point that Children from birth to been an adult, in their growth process, many of their thoughts, behaviors, language and education are learned from their parents. Like he said,” For a small child his parents are at first the only authority and the source of all belief”. Newborn children are like a piece of paper, are blank, they do not know anything, they need some people to fill out the paper, and the first person to fill this paper is usually their parents, most of people live with their parents after they born, they learn from their parents’ behavior, learn how to speak, how to eat, how to wear clothes and so on.  the same, they will learn bad behavior from their parents. Therefore, many people think that parental education is very important, because it affects the child’s future behavior, cognitive. When children grow up to teenagers, Freud mention that children start often quarrel with their parents. “Small events in the child’s life which make him feel dissatisfied afford him provocation for beginning to criticize his parents.” In this stage, teenager self-awareness is growing up, they want to be independent and don’t want obey on their parents, which  lead too many children have rebellion in adolescence. They start have their own ideas, and believe their ideas are right. So, many teenagers oppose adults still put themselves as a “child,” they think they are already adults. In order to express they are grow up, for anything, they will hold opposing side. This is because they are worried that their parents will ignore their thoughts, so they use various methods to establish equal status with their parents.

Untranslatable Self

After reading the poem “Song of Myself” by Walt Whitman, I think “self” represents all human beings, in the first three passage, Whitman believe that everyone is the same, no matter what race you are, what religion you believe, what job you are doing, everyone is equal. “For every atom belonging to me as good belongs to you“,”I guess it is a uniform hieroglyphic, and it means, Sprouting alike in broad zones and narrow zones, Growing among black folks as among white, Kanuck, Tuckahoe Congressman, Cuff, I give them the same, I receive then the same.” After that, he changes his point to everyone is not same, because everyone does not understand anything at a young age, but with the passage of time, under the influence of the environment, everyone has their own ideas, and everyone becomes “untranslatable self.” ” Tenderly will I use you curling grass, It may be you transpire from the breasts of young men, It may be you are from old people, or from offspring taken, It may be if I had known them I would have loved them, soon out of their mother’s laps, And here you are the mothers’ laps. This grass is very dark to be from the white heads of old mothers, Darker than the colorless beards of old men, Dark to come from under the faint red roofs of mouths.” Since growing up in different environments, everyone will encounter different people, learn different education from different people. They start to use their brains to think different things, said different words and do different things. These experiences belong to their own, and no one can know their thoughts. “untranslatable self”means that everyone is unique, follow your inner’s choice, to pursue your own future, don’t pretend to be someone else, just be true to yourself because there is no one else can replace you,  you are the only one in this world.

“hope” is the thing with feathers

After read“Hope”Is The Thing With Feather “by Emily Dickinson, this poem is saying that I feel like this poem’s idea has a lot of similarity with Jane Eyre. Jane Eyre is a woman who pursues to have a freedom, equality and self-respect life. She put these as her hopes. At Rochester’s house, she never felt inferior because of poverty and thought that everyone in here are equal. Because of this, Rochester felt she was a very special woman and fell in love with Jane. On the day of married, Jane knew that Rochester already married and his wife still alive, she felt she had to leave, and said “Still indomitable was the reply: “I care for myself. The more solitary, the more friendless, the more unsustained I am, the more I will respect myself. I will keep the law given by God; sanctioned by man. I will hold to the principles received by me when I was sane, and not mad—as I am now. Laws and principles are not for the times when there is no temptation. . .. They have a worth—so I have always believed; and if I cannot believe it now, it is because I am insane—quite insane: with my veins running fire, and my heart beating faster than I can count its throbs”(Jane pg284). Jane thought her self-respect has been deceived, although she still likes Rochester, but, she can’t accept Rochester  married and if she continue to live with Rochester, she will be despised by others and lose her “hope”, too. She did not want to have this life without any respect. So, she did not seek any compensation and decide to leave and to continue to pursue her “hope”.

Jane Eyre

Lorde said “I am afraid– you can hear it in my voice– because the transformation of silence into language and action is an act of self-revelation and that always seems fraught with danger. But my daughter, when I told her of our topic and my difficulty with it, said, “tell them about how you’re never really a whole person if you remain silent, because there’s always that one little piece inside of you that wants to be spoken out, and if you keep ignoring it, it gets madder and madder and hotter and hotter, and if you don’t speak it out one day it will just up and punch you in the mouth.” (Lorde pg 42)He argue  that we should not be silent, if you don’t speak out, no one knows you thought, and you won’t be a whole person. Do not be afraid that you say the things wrong, because at least they know what your idea is. Do not be afraid to be hurt, because if you do not speak out, they will still hurt you, only to speak out and resist, you have the only chance to change you life.” Here is a good example to explain it, Jane, a main character from “Jane Eyre” by Charlotte Brontte. She was a poor girl who lost her parents when she was young and then moved to her uncle’s house. After her uncle died, her life changed dramatically, she was bullied by her aunt Mrs. Reed and her children every day and NEVER resist. Until one day, John Reed bully her again, she resist, and attack back, because she knew that if she do not want to continue to be bullied by them, only to resist,  otherwise she will had to live this horrible life until died, although after that, she was locked in the red house, but it was a fortune for her future, because she learned only to resist unfair treatment and dare to say “NO” to any injustice things, and that is the only way she can change her life, and finally she did it and got the life that she wanted.

Sublime

When I saw the word of “Sublime”, the first thing comes to my mind is those who help us in our daily lives to improve our lives and ensure our security. every time we walk in the street, we can always see many buildings in the construction, the traffic police in maintaining traffic order, every week, there will always be a garbage trucks to take away our garbage, every snow day, there will always a bunch of people out to shovel the snow on the ground, to help us walk easy, safe and Convenient and so on. and we look at the recent decades of technology development, now, we have a mobile phone, computer, Unlike the past, now we can immediately contact people around the world and video chat instead of writing letters to others. We do not have to wear many pieces of clothing at home in the winter, because we can use the warming machine to increase our home temperature. And more and more incurable diseases can be cured, like tuberculosis, smallpox, heavy flu and so on. These people make me feel “sublime.” Because without these people’s efforts, we can not have such a safe and convenient life. Thanks to the efforts of these people to let us have a safer and more convenient future.

“introduction-to-the-englightenment-norton” Response

Through the Enlightenment, our lives have undergone tremendous changes, the biggest change is to realization that everyone are equal. In the late seventeen centuries, Civilians began to learn to think, why we need to obey king’s instructions, why upper class people have more opportunities to get a good job. Why women can not work and so on. Many people began to stand up to break the feudal system. Like women’s only job is to take care their children and “Among the privileged classes, men had many opportunities, for education, for service in government or diplomacy, for the exercise of political and economic power” (Page 7). We are all human beings, why do some people have privileges but we do not. This is unfair to most of us. same to women, like their said “if god had given all human beings reason, then women were just as entitled to develop and exercise their minds as their male counterparts the emphasis” (page 7). Many people have begun to protest this system in their own way, which make the Enlightenment began. “Women published translations from the Greek as well as volumes of literary criticism, and were the most prolific writers in certain genres, such as gothic fiction, even if society as a whole did not acknowledge their full intellectual and moral capacities, individual women were beginning to claim for themselves more rights than those of motherhood.”(Page7) like they said, “when the enlightenment began, was a period of great turmoil,”(page 3)。 The Enlightenment was the first step towards democracy. Because the Enlightenment occurred, changed the feudal ideology of many people. People began to understand that we should not be restricted by anyone, everyone is equal. Each of us should strive for the right that we should have. As a result of the Enlightenment, most of the countries became democratic countries, and everyone’s rights should not be violated by others.
