Man with a Guitar by Georges Braque

During my visit to the MOMA Museum, the painting that caught my attention was the one called “Man with a Guitar” by Georges Braque. He was a French painter born in May 1882 and died in August 1963. Some of his most important contributions were related to the Cubism movement.  This work I selected is very intriguing, he used light and dark shadows and a range of grey, yellow, brown, black and white tones. Some shapes are visible such as triangles and lines and some curved lines. At first, I was impressed by the tones and shapes but it took me a while to see the man with a guitar. I consider this work complete breaks the traditional forms by complicating reality and giving the viewer a chance to experiment with the eye. It makes you question the tittle, because the first thing you want to look for is for the actual man playing the instrument. However, as a modernist pioneer, he makes his painting very abstract. This work is related to the Cubism movement which is commonly known for the use of geometric forms in order to depict different points of view and dimensions. His work is related to that of Pablo Picasso.

Introduction

Hello, My name is Lady. I am a transfer student from Queensborough Community College, I graduated last Spring 2018 where I got my Business Administration Associate Degree. This is my first semester at Baruch, and I’m majoring in Human Resources Management. I came to the USA 12 years ago at the age of 21. I am from Colombia and had attended all my school years there, even some college years as well. Back in Bogota-Colombia, I was majoring in Modern Languages and that’s how I was introduced to different types of programs that allowed students to travel abroad. One of those programs that caught my attention was the Cultural Care Aupair program. This gave students the opportunity to live in another country for a year with a host family as au pairs, which meant we had to take care of their children, do some college credits and be immersed in their culture at the same time. That was the added value of improving the languages we were learning by living in the country where the language was native to. There were many other options such as Germany and Australia, but my first choice was USA. My overall experience was great except for the fact that I missed my family a lot. I had not planned on staying here permanently, however 6 months before it was my time to return I met the guy who is now my dear husband. We are both from the Capital, Bogotá. Back in Colombia we used to live in the same neighborhood, just a few blocks away, but we ended up meeting in Manhattan one day. We live in Queens, and have a healthy and happy almost 4 year old son. After I’m done here at Baruch, my husband plans to go back to college to get his degree in Nursing. He’s currently a Surgical Tech at the Hospital for Special Surgery. As a stay home mother, being a college student has been quite challenging, being my son my number ONE priority, a lot of sacrifices take place in order for me to succeed as a student. It’s been hard, stressing but the most rewarding experience because I am not doing this by myself, every goal I reach I must give credit to my husband and my son because we are doing this together and its for our own benefit. We’ve done it in the past and we are ready to do it all aver again.
