Introduction

Hi everyone, my name is Mildred Nunez. I was born in the Dominican Republic, but I’ve been raised in Brooklyn for most of my life. I just graduated high school this past June with an advanced regents diploma, and I started attending Baruch 2 weeks after my last day, as a SEEK student. I was kind of bummed out about giving up my summer, but I was able to make friends and meet a lot of people on campus so it wasn’t so bad after all. Last semester was a bit challenging, but I liked it. I was able to get out of my comfort zone in many areas, but the one I’m most proud of is getting in front of an audience. I didn’t do it just in my public speaking class, but I also pushed myself to sing at an open mic on the last day of the semester. It wasn’t the first time that I performed in front of a crowd, but for some reason, I just never manage to get over the fear. I’ve always loved music, and I especially pushed myself to sing and play guitar in front of people during many high school events. I was always known as the girl who always had a guitar in her hand. Ever since I started college, I never really have the time to play anymore… but when I do, it makes me enjoy it more. The joy I get from music is the reason I thought I could do Marketing as my major, but so far, I’m not sure if that’s the plan I’ll stick to. Fortunate and unfortunate enough I do like other areas of education. I’m apart of the 1% who likes math problems, while also being someone who likes to write. I think it’s beautiful what someone can do with words. However, I’m quite paradoxical because i’ve always said I love to write but hate to read. Anyways, I’m working on it. I’m actually looking really forward to the pieces of literature we’ll be going over this semester. I need inspiration to be able to write again.

Introduction

Hello my name is Robert Hoffmann, I am a transfer student at Baruch and am majoring in business CIS which stands for computer information systems.  Another term for it is data analytics. I just came back from Colorado where I went snowboarding with a friend of mine.  I love hockey but can no longer play most due to an injury to my shoulder but snowboarding is something I try to do as much as possible over the course of each winter.  This is my first semester at Baruch and I am still trying to learn the in and outs of going to school here but its going well so far.  Some things I do in my spare time are go to the gym and play video games.  I am a very competitive person and am passionate about the things I care about.  In my opinion a person should always take pride in their work. I really dislike reading and writing probably two of my least favorite things to do for school so this class is very out of my comfort zone.  Occasionally I will find I enjoy a book or literary work that is required for school but other then that I normally do not read things on my own other then internet posts.  I hope this semester I enjoy one of the literary works that are required to read for this class. Another thing about me is that I do not live in the city I live on long island and commute to school here every day.  The commute is usually around an hour and twenty minutes long which isn’t that bad especially since most of it is just a train ride.  I am almost done with school and I hope I can do well my first semester here so I can finish my degree either this upcoming December or by spring of 2020.  After school its off to the real world to find a suitable job and career for my degree either here in New York or perhaps looking into going to Los Angelas. I hope to have a great first semester here at Baruch.

Introduction

My name is Kunal Sharma and I am a sophomore at Baruch College. I am planning to major in Finance from Zicklin School of Business as my interest lies in the business field. I am an international student and came to New York city an year and a half  ago to pursue my bachelor’s degree. I was born and bought up in India and completed my high school diploma in Commerce and Physical Education from there. Some of my hobbies are listening to music, playing drums, and hanging out with friends. Apart from this, I am an active participant in many sports (indoors as well as outdoors) such as soccer, ping-pong, pool, badminton, skating, and athletics. Talking particularly about soccer, I have participated in Zonal, State, and National level tournaments. To be honest, I have not been an over-the-top person in most academic fields so far, however, I am aware that education in today’s world is one of the most important assets that my generation possesses. I can say that I am very active and efficient in everything I do that interests or occupies my mind. I do not have any such plans for future but some ideas that I have in mind are, either to be an investment banker as my major suggest or most likely initiate some sort of business of my own. I have also worked part-time up until this point in the Office of Student Life at Baruch College as an administrative assistant which served as a great opportunity for me to develop skills dealing with communication, software, and customer service. I do not have a lot of friends here but I do have one person who has helped me get through everything, be it good or bad, since I have been here, that is my girlfriend. I am deeply attached to my family which resides in India as well. A fun-fact about me is that I keep cleaning/organizing anything that I find out of place most of the time as I am almost certain that I suffer from OCD. I also like eating, my favorite dish is dumplings.

-How are courtesans represented in the story?  Why do you think Feng Menglong chooses to depict them this way?

-Money plays a central role in the story.  What does “Du Tenth Sinks the Jewel Box in Anger” seem to be saying about the relationship between money and love?
