“You and I” vs “We”

Summary

For my research paper, I wanted to discuss how capitalism and mental illness exist in a closed system through a paradoxical loop where they feed back into each other, with stigmas being the middleman. The target audience is mainly for those who scorn mental illness, but also for those who are struggling against mental illness in societies that are not just capitalistic, as I added some personal weight to my content. For the more detached analytical and statistical substance, I talked about how the negative connotation of mental illness in a workplace and also in society in general leads to those who are diagnosed or undiagnosed with a mental health condition to feel a sense of alienation due to the negative perception of mental illness. In short, those who are not able to meet capitalist standards due to roadblocks put in place by their mental disorders need a lot of time, energy, and/or money to overcome those obstacles, and capitalism and those "hypnotized" by it frown upon the usage of those resources for that purpose instead of allocating them to earning profits. Additionally, I dove a bit deeper in discussing how the biopsychosocial model in psychology interacts with the capitalist system, with examples in depression, anhedonia, and agoraphobia. My remix is essentially a short video that takes these ideas and not only transfers them from a literary medium to a visual mode of expression, but also communicates them in a different way while highlighting the systemic nature of this issue. You can see it like a video essay, but instead of a voiceover narration, it's music, captions, and images.

  1. Hi Carlson! I enjoyed watching your video and it definitely gave me a lot of insight on the intersectionality between mental illness and capitalism. I think your video is powerful because hustle culture has been super normalized. It’s always been putting work before yourself when it shouldn’t be like that.

  2. Your video was able to get a very serious topic across with minimal words through the use of pictures. I really like how you matched your claims up with pictures towards the end. It makes it feel much more powerful.

  3. I love how relevant and important the information is in trying to show the connection between capitalism and mental health. Capitalism sees mental health as a potential for profit and not a call out for help and need for change in its work environments.

  4. Love your remix, with the relaxed voiceover has a more immersive viewing experience, and it’s worth a deeper thought on the topic.

  5. The formatting and style of the video presentation really adds an element that helps the viewer better engage with the subject matter. I really liked the opening graphic that sets the tone for the rest of the paper.
