Final Project Proposal
For my final project, I will create a personal blog. The focus of my blog will be looking at the role of the mother in the Great Works of literature. I want to contrast the mother’s role and the father’s role. I want to focus on the mother character in terms of her relation with her children and her role in the story. I was inspired by the mothers in “Medicine” by Lu Xun. The ending in the graveyard really stirred something in me as two mothers bond over the death of their son. The mothers’ symbolizes hope and unity that the people are looking for.
My goal is to make a blog post about the reading material before class and making a blog post after the class discussion. The two blog post on the same reading will allow me to show my thoughts on the reading base on my own interpretation as well as connecting it to the themes of the course. The second blog post will allow me to share my thoughts about the class discussion and if the discussion has change my opinion or help me realize something. The second blog will also allow me to share any thoughts I did not have a chance to share in class. My goal is to have at least three blogs every week for the next six weeks.

It’s a good beginning, which I’m sure you’ll develop as you go toward a claim, or set of claims, about the told of mothers in our readings. How mothers figure in texts, and give meaning. Punishment offers a rich mother, though absent. And set against the father who’s dead she’s especially interesting. Many texts to come will be awesome for you. In Camera springs to mind. The mother, compared to the father–wow. Bring in imagery, too, if you can. How mothers are represented in other art forms. And don’t forget that the absent mother can be as suggestive as the present one!
I like this Summer! It is regarding a topic that is not given the significant amount of time and attention it merits, the role of mothers. Your blog plan sounds like an ambitious goal and I look forward to reading what you will post. One suggestion would be perhaps to also observe “Goblin Market” as the sisters seemed to display a mother-daughter type of relationship with the intense care and self-sacrificing love one sister had for the younger. And perhaps this may be getting a little off tangent, but the role of mothers to writers such as Keats may also heavily influence their writing and may be more material for you to explore if you find yourself in need of more things for your blog regarding the role of mothers. I wish you all the best!
This is a really interesting idea. I had a similar reaction to the graveyard scene, in which the mothers seem connected and bonded, even though they were complete strangers, just by both being mothers. It is quite a leap of faith to have such a specific target for your posts, but I’m guessing that you’ll be fine, based off of our professor’s reply. I also think it might be good to also analyze characters, who are not actually mothers but have a similar role. Comparing and contrasting Elmire’s and Dorine’s relationship to Mariane seems like it could fit as part of your blog as well. I can’t wait to see some posts.
