Social & Time management Problem

Being a full-time college student and working full time as the same time has been my life for the past few years. One thing I would say is that it is only if you are lucky that you will make friends on campus as well having a great time management. This is a common in most college student lives who works and study as the same despites their others outside activities and engagement they must fulfill.

College is already challenging added to being a full-time student and working full time requires a lot. First it is super overwhelming and stressful when you are in this case.  Not only that you really cannot interact much with your peers nor participate in the different activities that are put in place on campus for you as a student to socialize on one hand. Because as you run to attend class either right after or before that you had to work 8 hours shift or sometimes more, then get in the train which can lead to tardiness or tiredness. In such case you do not even enjoy college life and most of the time you job schedule will not allow you to participate to career/ internship workshop or fair even though it is very important for you as a student, since it is only after graduation that you realized all of what you missed, or you would have wished to do. Moreover, with such schedule, you never have time for yourself to do other stuff or distraction. However, you lack time to better focus and do better in your classes. Thus, you forget a lot on what It is due and when it is if you do not have a set calendar or reminder from note. On the other hand, you have love to either part time at your job, but you have so many bills and the family that depends on you. Or being a part time is impossible as well because you would not be able to get financial aid to help with your tuition. Such a dilemma in such students’ lives.

For my opinion I believe, college should create a section with individuals or college student who had been there before to educate and guide those students so they can also take advantages of all the opportunities the college offer and how to establish connections and spend time with classmates in building community on campus and off campus. Programs for working full time student based on their availability to take them out in a different environment and in helping them prioritize their study time management skills which help to avoid late or last minutes assignments.

  1. Hi Esther – nice idea and I definitely see the need for more “personal touch” to get students acclimated especially if they are transfers or non-traditional students who aren’t coming straight from high school. Look at Julian’s idea: https://blogs.baruch.cuny.edu/sacajulian/starting_off_on_the_right_foot/uncategorized/
Maybe there is some synergy here!

  2. Hi Professor,
Thank You . I will look at Julian’s idea

  3. Hello Esther,
This is a great idea for people that are both full time students and full time workers. I have never done a full time job during school, but I have done a part time job while being a full time student. Doing a part time job as a full time student was already so stressful, so I can’t imagine how much more stressful it must be to have a full time job as a full time student. It is definitely a great idea to create a program for full time students with full time jobs, since they do not have many opportunities to take advantage of the entire college experience that Baruch offers.

  4. Hi Wendy
Thank You. Yes definitely it will help a lot

  5. Problem
Many College working students faces serious challenge being in school and working as either part time or full time. Already College is an important path in our lives and it also requires lot from people who seek to pursue their higher education for a better career. Nowadays, a bachelor’s degree has become the most require degree for a startup job. Thus, working adults, and “unfortunate” students has to be working full/part time and also being full/part time student in school. I have always been one of those who works full times and being full time students. For mine experience, I see that many who comes as F-1 students are not allowed to work in the US unless they get a job in school. However, these jobs in school are not available to them and also most of the time the parents back in their home country cannot really afford the cost of tuition. Result, the student must do both to survive and succeed. Being one, a full-time college student and working full time at the same time for the past 11 years. One thing I would say is that it is only by luck and grace you will make friends on campus and benefit of the resources available for students. Lack of time or better time management unable such student and better opportunities and better success.
    Value Proposition
The value proposition is to focus more on all the non-traditional students on campus and see all different aspect to help them better cope and manage both school, work, household activities. Also, for international students have resources and mentors to direct them on taking advantages of the resources available for the traditional Students. College would aim on establishing new resources that could be easily found and access to the non-traditional students so they could really participate and interact in every opportunities and resources available to traditional Students.
    Solution
Colleges should create a section with individuals or college student who had been there before (mentor) to educate and guide non -traditional students so they can also take advantages of all the opportunities The colleges would offer webinar at different time so allow working students to participate so they could establish connections and spend time with classmates. Create a section on the College website only for non-traditional students giving detailed information for their personal success.
    Key Metrics
The key metrics in use should be reviews section and feedback sections giving to involved students, will be used to compare, and find out levels of satisfaction, levels of confidence, level of improvement, level of participation, level of contribution and would the student recommend this service to others based on their own experiences with their mentors and or the new resources such as conference, webinar meeting. With this review section or feedback, they could recognize hidden problems and find better ways to solve it so many be satisfied and enjoy the college life and opportunities offered.
    Unfair Advantage
The responsibility of finding the right mentors and helpful tips is a must to the college. This could do by engaged students who knows, lived, and want to make a difference in others’ lives. Because if you have the right reason, the heart, the mind and the experience to make a difference you will be also a good mentor with skills and right resources that will completely change the students involved and will be far from competitor to copy or exceed us.
    Customer Segment
The target customers would be working, international F-1 and incoming transfer college and/or university students. A program or data collector could recognize the different variety of students in those section. The Main target is “non-traditional students” because their problems have a requirement that is not acknowledged. Their pains and customer jobs (as defined by the value proposition canvas) directly link to the pain relievers and gain creators for their problems.
    Channel
I think the right way to connect mentors to students would be through a website or an app or flyers mailed to students’ home, text messages or email describing the resource. These are used currently by every college student. But when it comes to the channels in terms of letting students know about the service, college orientations can inform students about it, faculty member, advisors, conferences, webinar about all the advantages, benefit of having a mentor and the taking advantages of the services and resources offered only for non-traditional students.
    Three Assumptions
    – Non-Traditional students do not embrace the college life experience.
    – Many non-traditional students feel unsecure and stressed out when they start or go to college/ university.
    – Non-traditional students feel more confident and worthy in a place they have a mentor or someone who understand them and who could say I have been there once, and I am here to help.
