In creating this project, I realized that I needed to portray an object that has a personal level connection to create a much more compelling video. There are things in life that we never knew would bring so much impact and change in us. In my example, it is the guitar that I have had since high school.
My video project is an extension of the relationship between myself and my guitar, and the power of sentimental value. I attempted to show this through the development of my character’s perception of the guitar. At first, the guitar was treated as a mere commercial product, but later on, the character saw it as his “best friend”. The personification of the guitar is meant to invoke the power of sentimental value and nostalgia.
I included multiple parallel shots in the video to exemplify the idea of individual development. In one instance, the character was shaking his head because of how funny a rock band looks. Ironically, he ends up watching himself play in a rock band.
I decided to shoot this video with no assistance from anyone to create a layer of exclusiveness between my persona and the guitar. The camera used was crop sensor Nikon with a 50mm lens which puts the focal length to 75mm. The closeness of the camera view to the characters is meant to add a sense of confinement to this layer of exclusiveness. By the end of the video, however, we could see that the exclusivity is fading away as more people are added in the composition. This separation between the character is shown, furthermore, by the shot of the guitar as a background and my character as a foreground. The ending brings up the idea of an invaluable bond despite of the growing separation.
