Life and Loss

The purpose of all my pieces is to have a universal emotional connection with my audience. It doesn’t matter a person’s, gender, background, or native language, my art is thoughtfully created to connect with anyone anywhere.

I really hoped to do that with my piece but due to time constraints and lack of co-operation from my subject, Kitty, I wasn’t able to fulfill the vision I had in mind. In time, I do hope to spend more time with Kitty to get her comfortable and complete the vision I have for my project regardless of whether or not I can receive a grade for it.

My goal was to create a feeling of familiarity, not with Kitty, but with having someone or something and then losing them. Some shots of Kitty are close up and following them are shots of the empty space where Kitty was thereby giving viewers a sense of unexpected loss. The shot from above, while she circles the kitchen for 60 seconds, shows Kitty’s delusional episode which she has often since she’s gone blind. Kitty will be 19 in March and delusional episodes are normal for cats. As an art piece, her circles were both symbolic and literal. She is walking through the “circle of life” which may end unexpectedly soon (symbolic) and she is delusional (literal). The piece ends with a photo of her at 2 years old, before her ear infection, blindness, and delusion. The slow panning into the photo can be left to interpretation. Some may see it as looking into the past or an unclear vision of the present while reminiscing on the past which is what may people do during a loss.
