Symposium: Entrepreneurship & Innovation as a Force for Good

Overview:

This symposium will explore how entrepreneurial and innovative approaches can be applied as a force for good and address pressing social challenges. Experts will share their insights on social entrepreneurship, nonprofit management, grassroots innovation, artificial intelligence, and poverty alleviation across various countries. The event is part of the Entrepreneurship & Innovation (E&I) Research Cluster and is co-sponsored by the Field Center for Entrepreneurship and the Provost’s Office.

Attendees will gain new perspectives on how research and practical initiatives can drive meaningful social change, while critically reflecting on the conditions necessary for innovation to effectively contribute to societal impact.

  • Dr. Lauren M. E. Goodlad
    Distinguished Professor of English and Comparative Literature
    Rutgers University
    Topic: Design Justice AI and the Socio-Cultural Implications of Emerging Technologies
    Dr. Goodlad will focus on the Design Justice AI Initiative*, with emphasis on the socio-cultural implications of “generative AI”, and the conditions for advancing justice and cultural thriving. *Design for Justice AI is a global humanities institute co-organized with the University of Pretoria, the Australian National University, and the University of Connecticut
  • Eduardo Gustale – UNDP Representative
    United Nations Development Programme – Accelerator Labs
    Topic: Grassroots Innovation and Poverty Alleviation
    Eduardo Gustale serves as Monitoring, Experimentation, and Learning Specialist at the UNDP Accelerator Labs. Eduardo will share his insights on how grassroots innovation is being used to improve the overall well-being of communities and how to combat poverty across diverse contexts and regions.
  • Dr. Janelle Kerlin
    Associate Professor, Andrew Young School of Policy Studies
    Georgia State University
    Topic: Social Enterprise and Nonprofit Management
    Dr. Kerlin’s work focuses on cross-country/comparative perspectives on social enterprises, particularly how these organizations operate to achieve social impact in various contexts.
  • Dr. Tom Lumpkin
    Professor Emeritus of Entrepreneurship
    University of Oklahoma
    Topic: Social Entrepreneurship and Civic Wealth Creation
    Dr. Lumpkin’s research focuses on the intersection of entrepreneurship and civic wealth creation, with a particular emphasis on generating social impact for communities through collective action.
