Gallery Tour- Mercedes Matter: A Retrospective

I attended gallery tour on November 17th at 22nd street. This workshop was amazing. We waited on line for an hour. When we first walked in to the gallery, we putted our bags aside and started our journey to Mercedes Matter’s art. Matter was an American modern artist who is famous of abstract paintings. Our tour told us that Matter’s paintings are very abstract that audiences can not ask what the art is about.

The first set of art we saw was Matter’s painting from nine years old, adolescent, adulthood and old age. We saw the transitions of her painting from childish to thoughtful. Her nine years old painting was a toy which did not seem as abstract as her later paintings.

The second painting we saw was a painting full of triangles, color, and shapes. It was so abstract that I could only see the shape of an apple and few triangles.

The third painting was full of lines and texture. The painting was constructed during her late age, we can feel the freeness in her mind because the color and the texture are so casual. By looking at Matter’s painting, I was attracted by all the confusion that I want to know what is she trying to convey in the painting.

Even though I did not understand the meaning behind most of the paintings, the workshop was an open eye opportunity to acknowledge the different type of paintings.

My eighth blog

December 1st, during the lunch break, I attended a gallery tour, which belonged to the Arts at Baruch workshop category. On this artistic tour, I had the pleasure to see Mercedes Matter’s paintings. Mercedes was born in 1913 and died in 2001. The guide introduced her whole lilfe to us. She was born in New York City and had somekind of relationship with Baruch (I could not remember what that is). In the exihibition room, paintings were classfied by their creted time. There were three main categories: early age, middle age, and old age. There was a painting created at her age of nine. I was so surprise that a nine year old could paint such a master piece. When she was older, Mercedes used a modernist style on her paintings. When I looked at her paintings, I could not tell what that was. But I knew she was telling us something. That something was her view of this world or something else. Our guid told us things do not ask in a exihibition room. Even though we may not understand the painting, we can not ask, “What is that?” Instead, we should say, “What is this painting trying to express?” This is a very useful technique, and I am sure we all should remember this in our deep mind. There were dozens of   abstract paintings in the exihibition room. Someone asked where we can buy her paintings. I thought we could  buy photos of her paintings. Actually, I googled Mercedes Matter and found many of her abstract paintings. It is a great tour, and I hope you will like the paintings as I do.

Resume Writing

I went to the Career Exploration workshop on Resume Writing at November 4th, 2009. I dressed on my business attire, however, I found out that so many people did not wear theirs and they still could get in. Anyway, this is a really helpful workshop. I learned a lot of things about resume writing. A Resume is important for you to apply the job, however, it do not guarantee for getting the job you wanted, it is the interview do. I also learned the formats of the resume, such as it can’t be more than one page, you need to find connection with the job you worked before when you writing the experience part. Writing a resume also a word game and the speaker gave us a helpful list of verb that made a resume sound more professional and powerful.  Not only that I learned How to write a good resume, I also learned many tips on my future working plans and strategies. The first thing I learned is to pay attention while somebody is speaking. The speaker started the lecture by telling us to introduce ourselves to the class, and then after the last person finished, he randomly pointed at a student and asked who is he or she, and most of us did not remember. From the first 10 minutes of the lecture, I learned that I did not pay attention on others’ speech, because I was worry about my own introduction of myself and did not pay attention to other people. In addition, I also learned that there are many skills that are needed for every job: communication skills, organizational skills, interpersonal skills, creative skills, leading skills, and problem solving skills. Those six skills are important for every job, and I need to develop them by practicing, and interacting with people, reading and talking more in classes. This is a great workshop that I would recommend it to all students. The interview workshop will be a great follow up workshop to go!  In addition, the Career Development center will help you proofread your resume!

My seventh blog

November 19th, I attended another business workshop. There were two main reasons for me to attend this workshop, the Job Fair Workshop. The first reason is that I found out business workshops were very helpful after attending the Resume Workshop and the Internship Workshop. Even though I am just a Freshman, I learn to prepare myself from these workshops. The more I get when I am still “fresh”, the greater I will be during my later years at Baruch. The second reason is that I could not find an Academic Enrichment Workshop to attend, so I choose to attend one more business workshop. This Job Fair Workshop happened during my lunchbreak. In order to attend the workshop, I needed to register online for a reservation. The presenters came from the Virison Company, both of them did a great job on that day. I seated in the front row accidentally, and I was so so nervious because I was afraid that they might ask me questions. I like to be a listener, but I am not a good listener. During the workshop, the presenters told us things should do and things should not do at the Job Fair. One day later there would be a Job Fair in the Gym Room, the presenters encouraged us freshmen go to the Job Fair and feel how it is like. The presenters share their own experience with us, and teached us so many useful techniques for a successful conversation. It is my great pleasure to introduce this great workshop to all of you! Hope you will like it as I do.

Career Exploration; Create your Own Major

A couple of hours ago, I attended a career workshop based on choosing between different majors. It was quite interesting because the speaker presented some useful information. She asked who in the room already knows what they want to major in and who doesn’t know yet. Most of us know what we want to do in life and for those who doesn’t, she confidently said that it is ok. They could go fill out the questionaire in the Office of Testing Evaluations to determine what their personality is like. Then a list of career jobs can be matched to that personality.  I already know what I want to major in, that is, if I’m not willing to change it.  She also discussed different types of majors available whether it’s performing arts, accounting, business management, marketing, journalism, computer sciences, etc. I was quite surprised that most students paid attention because normally, they would get bored out or easily fall asleep. This is probably because of the eloquent speech she delivered. She talked about the three schools that we have to get into in order to work on our major. I feel like there are so many expectations we have to take into account in order to get to where we want. It would be such a challenge to meet the requirements. Anyway, it was getting late, but the workshop didn’t last for a long time. She let us out about twenty minutes earlier. It was pitch black outside once i stepped out of the room and looked at the window. Overall, the career workshop is effective because I have learned a great deal from it.

Gallery tour

On November 17, 2009, I went to Baruch’s Gallery tour located on 135 East 22nd street. When I got there, there are already many students waiting in a line. Most of them are freshmen. The staff at the gallery only allowed about 20 students to get in each time. I was in the second group to enter. After I went in and signed o a piece of paper, I was attracted by the colorful paintings hung on the wall. They were all painted by Mercedes Matter who began painting at only 6. During the tour, the instructor of the gallery explained how the artist’s work developed from her early time to the older. She also told us that unlike the writing, the art used shapes, colors, spaces and textures to express the meaning. For example, Matter’s most works were done by using triangles. The instructor pointed out every triangle in her painting. I can hardly see the triangles; it’s hard for me to interpret all the paintings. Maybe I am less talented, and I didn’t see a table that was painted in one of the paintings either. Although the tour was very short, which lasted about 15 minutes, I learned a lot of things. And I was impressed by the paintings. I really like this workshop.

Blood Drive

On December 2nd, 2009, I went to the work shop called Blood Drive. It was at the first floor of VC-campus. I did once donated blood in my high school so that I had the experience. When I got there, there was a receptionist. Also there were nurses and doctors, too. Of course, there were many snacks and juices for participants since they need energy to donate blood. I went there with my girlfriend, Sora. We asked what is the minimum weight to donate the blood and the answer was 110 lbs. Sora was underweighted so she couldn’t donate the blood. Of course, I weight more than 110 lbs so I could donate my blood. However, since my next class is right after 20 minutes I couldn’t donate my blood. From my experience, I knew it would take longer than 20 minutes. Not only that but also I had to go to a work after the class. When I donated my blood in my high school, even though I had juices and snacks, I felt so dizzy and tired. I couldn’t do anything after donating my blood and I had to sleep all day long after the donation. Since I had work to do after school, and knew what I would feel after donating my blood (dizzy and tired), I decided not to participate on it. I felt sorry for people who need my blood, but I couldn’t help it. Next time when our school have another blood drive, I promise that I will participate on that.

Career exploration

I went to a workshop called resume writing on October 27, 2009. They sent an e-mail saying that we have to dress up for this workshop so I actually followed the instruction, and dressed up with a formal vest, a button down shirt, and pants.  However, very few people dressed up and they didn’t care about it. It really made me upset because since I had to wear uncomfortable clothes all day long for nothing. The lady explained to us how to write the resume. Since I had many different jobs and did write the resume before, I knew what they were talking about. They told us good vocabularies to catch the attentino of employers that we can use in our resume and it was very helpful. I think this work shop was very helpful and organized. I actually learned a lot of things from this work shop. And they also said we can visit the STARR career department and by visiting it, it would help me getting jobs by letting them know that I’m there to get a job. Since I’m a freshman, I don’t feel the need of getting a job. I have a part-time job in Manhattan right now but it is not my major career. Later on when I’m looking for a job or an intership, I will definitely visit that organization and get some help. I would definitely recommend this work shop to my friends.

Reading and conversation with Joseph O Connor

On October 20, 2009, I visited a workshop called reading and conversation with Joseph O Connor. When I got there, they provided us cheese and sodas, which was really good. And the cheese was very good at first time, but later on, I got tired of it. I couldn’t continue eating that. And soda was a little too flat. Anyways, as I was eating the refreshments, I listened to Joseph O Connor. Well, firstable, it was very boring. I just sat down there doing nothing for two hours. He didn’t talk to the audience but felt like he was just talking to himself. He read his poems and excerpts from his writings and that was very monotonous. And after bearing two hours, I couldn’t find anyone to sign my passport for freshman seminar requirements. So I just took a picture of myself in that hall. There were cameras filming the author and the audience, which was not a very good idea since no one really was engaged in the conversation. Few people from other organizations, talked to him but it was not interesting. I wouldn’t recommend this workshop to anyone who does not enjoy literature. I was there with four of  my friends but no one liked it.

Gallery Tour.

On October 13th of 2009, I went to the Sidney Mishkin hall located in 22nd st. for the gallery tour. When I got there, there was a long line. Since there were too many people, they divided us by few groups and let us go in one at a time. As a result, I had to wait out side for about ten to twenty minutes. The gallery was very clean but small. It was so small that it just took me about 10 minutes to see all the pictures there. Pictures were mostly photographs that people took before. There were so many great pictures that was interesting. Some pictures seemed like other things, but actually it wasn’t the thing that I expected. My favorite picture was the mountain picuture with different overall blue color. Blue mountain was very interesting to see and looked very different even though it was same mountain that I’ve seen. I really enjoyed this workshop. I would definitely recommend this to my other friends.
