Travis Tran New York Times “Front Page” Project BLOG Post #2

1) The sharing process was based on whoever did the articles. I presented each of the articles I wrote myself, and my group members did their own. We basically reread our own articles a few times to try to present without looking at our site.

2) The experience was good since we all need practice presenting for future classes or jobs we might take. Presenting the project sort of helps get rid of stage fright.

3) I learned that presenting isn’t always easy. At times I forgot some information so I had to look at the site to help my memory.

4) I think my peers did well and had fun presenting. No one seemed nervous and they were ready to present the moment they were called up. It’s good for experience because you can see and compare your presenting skills with others.

5) The experience overall was fun. You get to see how others present and it’s always entertaining when presenters crack a joke.  And again it’s always good to present to get some experience for future classes or jobs.

6) I learned about the events and news the class presented on. Many of them went to the club fair, which I didn’t go, but I sort of understand how the event went after they explained it. As for the news, I learned about things that I haven’t seen on TV, and it’s always nice to be kept up to date with news.

Title: Social Networking in the 1600s

In today’s society, social networking is all internet and business based.  The use of Facebook and Twitter costs the US economy $650 billion per year. Along with that, students who continue social networking notice they have a shorter attention span and worse grades.  Back in the 1600s, none of that would have been a problem. The 1600s Englishmen were able to study without any distractions. Their social networking areas were coffee shops. Coffee shops weren’t just for coffee, they were places where people could gather to converse or read. Coffee shops also represented the business world. Merchants gathered within them, raising companies and new business models. Basically, coffee shops were the first sightings of a social network, but with today’s technology, social networking is more convenient.

Title: Twitter vs. Facebook: A Tale of Two Sites

Twitter and Facebook came about within the last decade. Facebook is the number one social networking site, and Twitter is second. Both sites allow people to interact with their friends by sharing photos or messages. Twitter specializes in the news and entertainment, and Facebook leans more towards communication with people you know. The main difference between these two is that Facebook has over a billion users, while Twitter has around 200 million. Facebook also generated a larger revenue in 2012. Even though Facebook is clearly more popular, Twitter continues to compete with them. Twitter buys Vine after Facebook buys Instagram. The competition will continue on since both these sites continue to gain more users.

Title #1: Twitter’s Biggest Risk? Losing You

Twitter has been a major social media site since it came out. It’s all thanks to the millions of monthly users that Twitter has been kept alive, but what would happen if all the users just stopped using Twitter? For starters, all the ads on Twitter would be useless, so company’s would stop sponsoring them. So in order for Twitter to keep gaining revenue, they need to increase amount of users, therefore they aim to gain more users in countries such as Argentina, France, Japan, Saudi Arabia, and South America. Thanks to popular people, mainly celebrities, people join Twitter to know more about their lives. If one day, a new social media site comes along and steals all the tweeters away, Twitter will die just like Myspace.

Title #2: The Numbers Behind Twitter

Twitter gains many new users everyday, but their rise in profit isn’t big. Twitter had loss $79 million in 2012, but they also gained $317 million. Majority of the revenue Twitter gets are from advertisements.  About 85% comes from ads. The reason for Twitter suffering losses is due to their lack of advertising is other countries other than the US. Revenue gained from outside the US is only 25%, therefore Twitter must expand more globally to keep the company alive. Unfortunately Twitter’s attempts to expand internationally were unsuccessful, but they must continue to expand in order to prevent themselves from going out of business.

The first two pictures show my favorite basketball and football team. I’m a huge New York Knicks and New York Jets fan. Whenever either team loses I feel a part of me die. One thing I want to see before I actually die is the Knicks winning a championship as well as the Jets winning the Super Bowl.

The third picture is of my favorite video game, Kingdom Hearts. It came out for the PS2 years ago, but they decided to remake for the PS3 so I had to get it immediately. The fourth picture shows my favorite book series, Harry Potter. I like the movies too, but I prefer the books since they expand the story more.

The fifth and sixth pictures are of my favorite food and drink. I eat halal food at least once a month and buy bubble tea once every few weeks. Around where I live, bubble tea shops and halal carts are close by each other so it’s convenient for me.

The seventh picture shows Hong Kong. I used to hate going there, but once I got used to the city, it became my second home. Even though the flight from NYC to Hong Kong is 16 hours, I wouldn’t mind going 2-3 times a year.

Finally the last picture shows a logo of the place where I realized who my true friends are, Bayside High School. I had a lot of good friends throughout my four years in high school, but it wasn’t until senior year that I realized who I was going to say in touch with during my adulthood, and these people mean the world to me.
