The first time I heard music that sparked my interest was when I was about twelve years old. It was a summer afternoon and the sun was finally setting. My family and I were coming back from who knows where and my mother decided to play one of her favorite albums, Abraxas by Santana. About five minutes in to the album, a song began that would completely change my idea of music, it was called “Black Magic Woman”. The at first “strange” assortment of rhythmic bongos, sexy guitar rifts, and figurative lyrics were the perfect mix to inspire me to listen more. By the end of the album, I felt the up most elation. It felt as though the world had given me something I would never lose. Since then, I have felt the need to listen to more and more artists that intrigue my musical taste buds, and it has led me to where I am today.
Nowadays, I listen a variety of genres. From sub genres like indie rock, britpop and surf rock to as far as electronic rock, folk and psychedelic music. It seems as though these genres strike me in ways other genres just can not. But this is not to say I dislike popular genres. In fact, being born and raised in New York City, hip hop occupies a special place in my heart. Now, onto the actual music. The playlist I composed consists of ten songs that I feel have significance to us as adolescents. These songs cover topics like love, friendship, nostalgia and youth. I hope you enjoy it!
