Maybe’s Groove

To the outside world, I’m that quiet girl who seldom speaks and fades into the background.  I don’t know if it’s always been this way, but as far as I can remember, I find it extremely hard to open up to people.

Here’s a little bit about myself:

At the age of six, my parents brought me to the United States in the hopes that I could get an education and have a “better life”.  When I came to America, I believed that as long as I worked hard, I would reap the same benefits as everyone else.  Boy, was I wrong!  Junior year rolled to an end, and I discovered that I wouldn’t qualify for financial aid simply because I didn’t have “papers”.

Fortunately, thousands of undocumented youth, like myself, are now able to reside in the country and work legally because of the Deffered Action for Childhood Arrivals Policy that President Obama championed.  It was because of this policy that I was finally able to get my first job at Century 21 during the summer!  They pay me $7.25 an hour and – call me crazy but – I save up every single penny for school (of all things).

Actually, the only reason I’m able to sit in class with you guys this semester is because I won a small scholarship.  Right now I’ve saved enough to study for a year, but I don’t know how I’ll pay for the rest.  I know loans are an option, but they’re somewhat limited for me.  To be honest, I have a lot of pride and that’s part of the reason why loans are a last resort.  When it comes down to it, I want to be able to say “I did it on my own.”

So, I apologize if I seem cold or distant to any of you.  Like most of the songs I listen to, my “lyrics” have become restrained.  Anyway, I hope I can get to know you guys better throughout the semester.  If anyone needs help with anything, I’d be glad to lend out a hand!
