Abdulah’s Meme

Snip20141102_1

Every procrastinator can relate to this meme. Whenever a teacher in high school or a professor in college assigned an essay or project, I would almost always leave it until the day before to begin and attempt to finish it. Yes, I know it is not an efficient way of working to my full potential, but I value my time. I believe that time is the most expensive thing that can’t ever be replaced because once it’s wasted, it’s gone. Many young people would agree with the meme because they would much rather go to a party and have a good time than sit at a desk and think of a critical and analytical way of approaching and doing an assignment.

However, having fun may not always be the reason why students do not finish their work earlier than the day before the assignment is due. As students, we take more than one class, thus, the possibility of receiving a copious amount of assignments is extremely high. Time management is a crucial factor in how and when assignments are done. Hence, even the smartest and most organized students can relate to this meme. It would be inhumane for individuals to finish about 5 different assignments, at least, efficiently in a short period of time.

The rate of difficulty of the assignment can be a factor for stalling the assignment. Students have a variety of classes that range from the easiest to the hardest. Receiving an assignment from your easiest class would make one take it almost as a joke, like “psh, is this guy serious?” Personally, I’ve said that many times for SPECIFIC classes. Those assignments from the easiest class may be held until the day before to start because of how easy the task for the essay or project is. In high school, my music teacher gave us a “FINAL” to write our own piece of music. Well sure, I thought sarcastically. Time to bring out the Mozart in me. My music piece was not written the day before, but instead the day of music class. Luckily, it was last period so I had the entire lunch period to collaborate with my fellow “composers” on different ideas and how I should approach my piece. Turns out, I got a 93 on the piece and passed the class. I don’t remember what I ate for lunch, but I do remember that that was a good day.

In conclusion, time is the most valuable thing you can give anything and anyone. That’s why when people “waste” their time on certain things, they feel sad or upset. However, everyday is a new lesson and giving up your time on anything is valuable itself because of the knowledge gained through it. Similar to the concept of either going out to party or sitting at a desk and looking at your computer screen, there will be a lesson learned with each decision. If someone chooses to party, they either learn that they’re a party animal and keep it up, or settle down and rethink their lifestyle. But if the person chooses to stay home and do their work, then they learn the essence of education and how important it is to keep money in your wallet instead of “wasting” that at the party too.

Abdulah’s Monologue

The horn alarm went off as a sign that our 30 second timeout has come to and end. My other four teammates walked onto the floor as I got up off the bench trying to relax myself. I was lying to myself to calm down the moment. “Act like these fans are not here.” “Its just another gym session shooting free throws.”

Our basketball team was down by 4 points, with 0:40 left in the 4th quarter.

Although I told myself those lies, the noise of the crowd made it hard to detach myself from reality. “It’s okay,” I thought. “I’m not letting them get the best of me.” I got angry. Turns out, anger sometimes brings the best out of people.

As he stood under the hoop, the referee passes me the ball. I felt every single eye staring at me in that moment. I called it “a hollywood movie premier to ‘Wolf of Wall Street’ and I was Leonardo DiCaprio.” Once I received the basketball, I move my hands around to improve my grip and essentially become one with the ball. “Right hand center-right, guiding hand to the left,” I thought.

Releasing the ball, I focused on the hoop to see the product. *CUFF* The net sounded as the ball went through. Down by 3.

My friends who came to watch in the stands overwhelmed the noise that the fans of the other team made. “Yeah. I shut up a home crowd,” I thought. The greatest achievement that a player, or team, that is “away” can accomplish.

I got the ball back for one more shot attempt at the free throw line. My teammates who were lined up to grab a rebound, Jordan and T-Mac, looked at me and moved there hands in an up-down direction, signaling to calm down and not to worry about the crowd but about the game. I did just that. *CUFF* MY crowd went crazy! Down by 2.

Inbounding the ball, the other team had to respond to those two shots I made. They did just that. Collapse on defense, Jordan and I did not communicate with each other that there was a man open in the wing. *CUFF* He made his shot. Down by 4, again. They killed the clock as there were only 0:10 seconds left.

We had no more timeouts, but everyone was on the same page. We needed to score fast, even though the odds were against us. Inbounding the ball to Henry, I ran as far up the court as I could to get a shot up. Trapped, I couldn’t get free to get the ball. Time expired and the game was over.

“DAMN!” We lost the game by 4. Personally, I don’t think I have ever heard a home crowd switch and get back into the game as quickly and obnoxiously as they did. A bunch of unnecessary comments were thrown at us as we exited together.

“Guys!” I said as we left the gym. “This is only a sign that we can keep a close game even when we are the foreigners. We will get them next time and I can guarantee you that.” Loses are remembered more than wins for those who are true competitors, and that loss influenced me to get back up no matter how hard it may be.

Who’s Abdulah?

Hey LC 09! I decided to make a slideshow for you guys with the people, places and things that mean the most to me.

I’m an Aquarius. I was born on February 9, 1996. My father and mother were immigrants from Montenegro, a state of the former Yugoslavia, but now they both are citizens of the United States. Their struggle and ambition to succeed and create opportunities from nothing is what motivates me everyday in life. My father, a hard-worker, is a great individual who influenced strength and loyalty as a part of my personality as I was young child. My mother plays as a coach to my life to this day. Intelligence, kindness, sensitivity, and most of the things that I have learned are through her experience and knowledge. My parents helped set the foundation for me as an individual in order to become the person I am today. My siblings and friends are the greatest young group of kids to be around. My sister is my backbone and support. Whatever I choose to do, I can count on her to cheer me on through everything. My little brother is the man! If you want to see a younger version of me, he is that guy. I can have a conversation with my brother that varies from sports to politics and nerdy stuff. We even engage in the same sports and other activities. My other “brothers” are one of the closest group of friends that I have because they have my back with anything and everything. Our relationship with one another is very unique because not only have we known each other for a long time, but also it works both ways with love, strength and humor. Whenever we hang out, it’s never a dull moment. They showed me the greatest things about life and how it isn’t always about serious stuff and making a lot of money. Life is valuable through achieving happiness, and with my parents, siblings, and “brothers” I feel as though they lighten up my life to a whole new level.

If you know me well enough you will know that I am into cars and sports more than anything else. Mercedes-Benz has always been an obsession of mine growing up. When my father purchased a Mercedes-Benz GL350 in 2010, it stimulated my obsession even more. Like, “wow we have a Mercedes-Benz now.” It was amazing! Now my father bought me a Mercedes-Benz ML350 in April, 2014. That was the greatest day of my life so far! Going to the dealership and having the people at Silver Star Motors already know who I was, then being escorted to see my car, and finally driving it home. It was a good day to be, I guess. Although I have an amazing car, that I am immensely grateful for, I feel that my obsession can’t ever be satisfied. My dream car is a Mercedes-Benz CLS550. However, by dream car I don’t look at that as a finish line. The day I purchase a CLS550 is only a checkpoint to greater and better things. I set myself goals that I hopefully will achieve one day, and one of them is purchasing the CLS550. Basketball has been influential to my health because I was a fat child growing up. The love of the game developed over time through constant practice and the will to get better as a player. During my high school years, I was part of my varsity team and became captain during my senior year. The basketball team was a family. We traveled everywhere together, shared great moments of victory and hard times of losses as a unite and continued to fight on. We achieved many great things during the regular season as a team and I wouldn’t trade my teammates for anyone else. Every season had it’s own story with these guys, and I cherished every single one of it. Although it may sound cliche, being part of the basketball team really taught me to be unselfish and look out for the well-being of others. We had a common goal to win and that stayed as our goal throughout the games, practice and meetings. Basketball always has and always will be a part of me.

Two places that are the most sentimental for me are Montenegro and New York City. These two different areas in the world influenced me incredibly to become very diverse, cultural, and open-minded as an individual. I travel to Montenegro every summer for 1-2 months and have lived in New York City since day one. The amazing part of traveling and visiting another country is the idea and experience that there is a world that exists outside of the streets of NYC. My family in Montenegro lives mostly in the farmland areas, so spending time in places that are the complete opposite to that of New York City is truly impacting on the way I view society as a whole and understand the lives of others who are not as fortunate as I am. Every person, place, and thing in my life influenced me to be a humble individual.

Getting to know Abdulah

Abdulah

What’s up LC 09! My name is Abdulah Dervisevic. Although I was born in the United States, my family is originally from Montenegro. I live in Astoria, Queens, for 11 years now and absolutely love it. I graduated from the Baccalaureate School of Global Education in Astoria with an IB Diploma and a High School diploma. The reason why I chose Baruch was because I felt that it satisfied all the characteristics and features that I wanted in a college, such as being affordable, having a great business school, and located close to home. I plan on going into either economics or finance as a major, but that may change. I love to play basketball and other sports during my free time and workout in the gym. I’m an open-minded person, kind, and fun to be around, so I definitely want to make as many friends as I can at Baruch.
