FRO 14 LC15

This semester I found out how expensive college really is. Especially the textbooks. I am learning how to balance my social life, a job, home responsibilities, and college work all at the same time. It is getting easier however I never expected it to be THIS difficult. But still, college is fun nonetheless. I love the fact that I have my own freedom and make my own money. Even if some of that money goes to a textbook I will rarely look at. -Sabrina

This is literally how I feel everyday during and after class. Whenever I have something due soon and I’m “forced” to work on it, this is how I feel like. For so many times I just pretend that I don’t have work to do and do whatever I feel like at the moment. And at the end of the night, especially Sunday night, I struggle to get myself together and settle down for work. But what really goes on in my mind is this picture. The top picture depicts me as a second semester senior, but now, as a college freshman I really can’t just say fk this and leave my work undone.

This basically summarizes what the workload in college is like. The transition from High school to college was hard since I took senior year in high school very lightly. However entering college I knew that the road towards success would not be as easy and I would need to put in a lot more effort than usual. One thing I do love about college is the amount of time time I have outside of class and the independence of making my own choices. Since I do not live with my parents anymore, I have the freedom to explore New York City and come home as late as I want. However with this newfound independence also comes responsibility, a downside of having tons of freedom. Also I got to meet a lot of cool people and make a lot of friends which is great considering how much fun it is, while hanging out with them in one of the biggest cities in the world. Other than that I’m glad I chose Baruch as my college. It feels like home, even if it is a commuter school. As a first semester freshmen, I learned one thing for sure. College is what you make of  it and that shapes you into who you are. By the way, this picture is also ironic, since you can’t ever find a computer to work on in the Baruch library. My first semester in college was an amazing and hard working experience for me. The transition from being a senior in high school to a freshman in college was very difficult. During my final year in high school, I did not do much work. The picture above expresses how I handled work during senior year. When i entered college, I new I was going to have to make many changes in the way I handled school work. I successfully motivated myself to do all my work in college. I believe the key to success in college is motivation.

My goal for the Spring semester are not to make mistakes that i had once made in my first semester. I am aware that I have made some mistakes in my first semester in college and that I need to improve. The biggest mistake that I kept making my first semester was that I kept leaving things for the last minute. For instance, whenever we had a global blog due, I would start it maybe an hour before it was due. I was luckily able to finish them on time, and I may not be that lucky in the future. Another mistake that I made during my first semester was that I did not pay attention or take notes during class time. During my first semester in college, I would often daydream during class and not pay attention to anything the teacher taught us in class. This behavior backfired on me when midterms and exams began to start. I did not perform as well as I could have because I had not participated in class.

Although I had not received my grades yet. I already know that the grades i received this semester were not to my max potential. I believe I am capable of receiving a 4.0 GPA and I did not give the effort to receive that this semester. During this semester, I was often lazy and did not care to much about my grades.

I believe motivation is essential and a must need in order to do well in college. One thing I did not learn how to do yet is how to motivate myself properly. I am aware that if I am motivated properly, I can accomplish anything. The reason why I am not performing as well as I should be in college is because I am not motivated properly. I am hoping i learn how to motivate myself in the upcoming semester

This year I had promised myself to not procrastinate on my class assignments or projects but that was an utter failure. I ended up procrastinating my projects and had to put up with a huge work load that was not meant to be. Doing projects last minute was not the way to go. This first semester as a freshman at Baruch, I learned that managing your time efficiently and doing the most out of the time you have is essential to one’s success. Starting next semester, I hope that I can be true to myself and not push things to the last minute and do things before they are due and be prepared for a presentation of a project or getting things in before the deadline in order to manage my time so that I can do other things instead of having to cram and procrastinate all my homework and/or projects. Being a Baruch freshman has been a wake up call to start getting my sh** together and finish what needs to be done or I’m doing to fall behind.

I expected college to be hard and everything but I didn’t know how much homework I would have to do every night to stay on top of my classes. I always thought college was just about three tests and finals but boy was I wrong. I have at least 3 hours of homework, studying, or reading to do every single night. You have to do all the work every night so you never fall behind in any class. It’s hard but at the end of the day I know it’s worth it and as long as I put in the work I should be fine.

College has taught me a few things. First, there is a lot of more responsibilities being a college student. You need to do work for all your classes and try to get the best grades possible. There is more pressure too, especially with all the tests, quizzes and homeworks. I have often felt overwhelmed with all the work that is gven plus all the responsibities outside of school.  The most important thing I learned is time managment. I’m actually still trying to work on it. You need to figure out to use your time wisely to get all your work done. You need to balance out all the work you have with a job, fmaily, friends etc. I didn’t realize how much time I had before starting college. To wrap it up, you always need to be on top of your work but also try to have fun to make it worthwhile.

This picture represents exactly how I feel after this semester, exhausted. Transitioning from high school to college was something else. High school was so easy and no one cared about anything, everything was sort of just handed to you on a silver plate. Then I got to Baruch and was in for something else. The workload was a lot more, and no one really told you what to do anymore. It was kind of just your own responsibility. This semester has compressed a lot in so little time, it feels like after I was done with one big assignment or an exam, another was waiting. The first month and a half took some getting used to but now I can manage.

College is something else man. What you see above is actually a picture of me. I knew the workload would be significantly greater in college, but BOY, the workload is SIGNIFICANTLY greater in college. Not like I wasnt an independent individual in high school, but going to Baruch really makes you feel like somebody. This is the real world, and there is no room for slacking off in the real world. You got to be on top of your ISH and do what you got to do in order to succeed. It is not easy, but it is doable. Time management was probably my biggest issue; I got around to fixing that about a month ago though, so no problem. Soooooooo, Idunno. Baruch is an alright place. I am enjoying myself. College has made me a person that values time a lot more.  I felt I didn’t have enough time in high school, with practice hours, work, and time for my family and friends.  Now I compare that to college and realize how much time i had in high school compared to college.  High school was so much less stressful than college.  I never needed to actually learn how to spend all of my time wisely, but now I do.  I have a lot of things to do during and after school, and it keeps me super busy.  I feel I never have time for my friends and family anymore.  My stress level has been at an all time high, but I keep persevering and pushing on.  I realize that high school was nothing compared to college.  In high school I was easily one of the smartest kids in all of my classes, but in Baruch I’m only considered average.  In high school I used to be able to just get good grades without even trying, college hasn’t been that easy for me.  But that isn’t necessarily a bad thing since it gives me a reason to try harder.  I’m very fortunate to be where I am today.  My family and friends are the reason why I am the way I am today.  They shaped me into who I am.  I am very grateful to be able to go to a great school like Baruch, a great group of friends, a decent job, and a wonderful family.
