Student Life Post – Humans of Baruch

Hello everyone! To start off my life here at Baruch, I had the honor and privilege of being featured on the Humans of Baruch page. I got to share my story of my transition from a very small school to a school that’s filled with thousands of unique faces and personalities. To be honest, it’s pretty early in my college career but I’m so happy that people are willing to listen to what I have to say, even though I’m only an 18 – year old kid from Far Rockaway. I’d like to say that I’m well immersed into student life already! I currently have a Marketing Committee position in Women In Business, as well (Head of LinkedIn) and I’m joining the Hindu Student Association. It’s only been a few weeks (almost a month here!) and I already feel like I am making a statement on campus and of course, building relationships with the people I’ve come across during my many ventures. All of my friends from high school tend to tease me because I’m already so involved and I’ve just begun this college journey. Just because you’re a freshman and the youngest of the college doesn’t mean you should feel intimidated to try new things. I feel like it should motivate you to want to learn and do more! I’m very excited to see what else I can accomplish within the next four years, since I’ve already done so much in a month! I’m ready to become more than the 18 – year old kid from Far Rockaway and Baruch will definitely give me the potential to do that.

Blog Post #1

For my first official blog post, I decided to complete the V.A.R.K. Quiz as the academic aspect of the enrichment workshops. Although I would’ve enjoyed attending school events and participate in being a proud Baruch Bearcat, I chose to complete the V.A.R.K. Quiz because there just wasn’t enough time due to the various days off and completing this quiz was probably the easiest and most stress-free task compared to the other options. The V.A.R.K. quiz is a tool found in the back of the student handbook which is designed to show freshmen how they learn best by answering a total of sixteen questions. After the quiz is complete and the calculations are done, each student receives a score for Visual, Aural, Read/Write, and Kinesthetic. For my results, I received a score of 8 for visual, 9 for aural, 14 for read/write, and 8 for kinesthetic. I found this quiz to be not as accurate as I thought it would be according to my own understanding of how I believe I learn best. Though I do agree with the result I got for the reading/writing component, I also think that I learn best visually and aurally. The questions in the quiz were very random. I feel that if the questions were more directly involved with the important decisions students take everyday in both their personal and academic life then the results would be more precise and would help students understand their strengths and weaknesses better.

Blog Post #1 – Networking 101

Today I went to the Networking 101 career workshop. At first, I had trouble finding the room, but I was able find it after navigating through a multitude of doors. My instructor was really ‘natural’ to the point where everything she said seemed as if it was scripted and she wasn’t afraid to step out of her comfort zone to teach us how to act and not act during an job interview. She made it a rule we had to be presentable in every interview that the first impression is the most important. From there, she branched off to how much eye contact should be used, the different postures, and hand gestures. Afterwards, she paired us up with other students and made us pretend as if we were the employer and student. She also taught us icebreakers when the interview gets uncomfortable and awkward. This career class has taught me a lot about how job interviews were like in the real world and has given me a heads up for future interviews.
