Final Focus Assesment

When it comes to assessments like this, I always find that I’m pretty diverse in my interests. I find that I’d be able to adjust and go into whatever field interests me given the right amount of resources. The focus assessment that I took in order to evaluate good options for my career showed me nothing short of my previous conclusions. When it comes to life, I don’t think being close-minded on one field can provide you with success.

After some hassle with finding my password and getting into the Starr website, I was finally able to complete the assessment for something that I had previous information on. I’m sure that I will continue to think about my future career choices!

Focus Assessment

I like to consider myself a really dynamic person. I hold a lot of interests; art, writing, science, math, history. And while it seems great that I am so curious about the many topics, it does more bad for me. It’s the reason why I’ve always disliked the question, “What would you like to be in the future?”

I don’t have a good enough answer to that question. My interests are always shifting, I want to be everything. And the saddest thing is that these computer generated assessments have never worked for me because of that reason. In the Focus assessment, I got different results for each section.

But on a personal level, I found myself leaning strongly towards the arts, science, and writing. Maybe because they are the only things that truly reflect my curious nature and need to create, as opposed to anything mathematical….

Maybe I don’t like math as much as I thought and maybe I might change my major to something more scientific in nature, like biology.

Majors Minors Fair

img_1592My friend Albert and I went to the majors minors fair on November 10th. We both came into the day not knowing anything about how majors and minors even work. We got to the fair and there were many Baruch students and advisors helping you. I told one of the staff there that I was infested in attending Zicklin. So she showed me all the different majors that you can choose from if you plan on graduating Zicklin. After showing me many options I was able to narrow it down to two choices which I’m currently debating between even though I still have a few years to choose. Marketing and Finance both sounded very interesting to me. I was very happy to come out with at least a more narrow choice of majors than I went in with.

Focus Career Search

I found the Focus career search to be extremely accurate and helpful. Each of the different assessments came back with the same or similar results all stating that accounting, finance and budgeting were careers I should look into. I already had a pretty good idea of what I wanted to do and the assessments just reenforced that what I wanted to do were good choices based on my skills and wants. What I like most is that the Focus center connects you with resources based on the careers that were recommended to you. It gives you plenty of opportunity to take the next step in your career of choice.screen-shot-2016-11-25-at-2-24-29-pm

Finding A Career on Focus 2

Earlier today I registered and took the 5 focus assessments offered on the Focus2 website, which I signed up for through STARR. Originally signing up had actually been a hassle, because I had been a hunter student before, I didn’t receive any of the information I needed in order to register and take these tests. Fortunately, I was able to run over to the STARR center and let them know of my dilemma. The Focus2 Self-Assessment consisted of 5 sections, each centered on figuring out my personal attributes and figuring out the corresponding majors and occupations that would suit me. The assessments consisted of work interest, personality, leisure, values, and skills. I received a variety of suggestions after taking the tests, and a lot of the results consisted of both expected results, and unexpected ones, including the arts, music, and sciences. However, the career and major I am planning to go into, (Political Science, and Foreign Service Officer) never came up, so it is causing me to think harder about my set choices for the future.img_0087

To Be Honest

Today I took the five focus assessments and I have to say it was not very helpful. I don’t know if I’m the only person with this problem, but these assessments are never accurate. The jobs they suggested are not things I am interested in, maybe one or two I’ll consider. Before you say I’m not giving it a chance some of my least favorite subjects include journalism, writing, history, etc. Some of the jobs they suggested were news commentator, reporter, and copy writer. As you can see the supporting majors for those jobs are my least favorite subjects.

I don’t want the assessment to sound bad since I’m sure it was pretty accurate for other people. My main problem was I couldn’t decide which answer to chose, for most questions I felt that all the answer choices described my personality so it was difficult for me to pick one. There were a few jobs I would consider, but honestly it’s not likely that I will pursue them but who knows.

Assessments are Actually Accurate!

Before you go on asking questions. Let me explain. Today I took a few assessments on the Focus2Career website. They asked about what I’d like to do on my leisure time, what my work interests are, what skills I possess and what values I hold the highest. Supposedly, using this type of information, it should tell me which career seems best suited for me.

Now, personally I’d like to pursue a career somewhere in the IT field. Perhaps I’d be a software engineer, a systems administrator, or (and this is ambitious of me) Chief Technology Officer. I’ve always been interested in computers ever since I got one as a little kid. My father worked in the IT field when I was young, so I guess it’s in the genes, somewhat.

And you know what, the assessments pointed that yes, that career was the right one for me. I’d be like “tell me something I don’t know,” but this surprises me. I’ve been told that these assessments are pretty inaccurate. One of my friends was suggested that she should be a Biology teacher (nowhere near close to what she wants to do). Even as a former tutor, that would be the last thing to cross my mind as a career. Sure, I have a knack for explaining things (maybe too much) and I always want to help others understand, but I know teaching a group of 30 kids isn’t my line of work. I’ve already had to teach groups of up to 10, but that’s another story in of itself.

Blog Post #3

For the third blog I will be writing about me completing the Focus 2 Career site. The website asked us multiple questions in different fields, such as Work Interest, Personality, Leisure assessment, Values and Skills. I was very please to find out that for Work interest my first match was a Real Estate Broker. Ironically enough; I actually want to be a real estate broker when I grow older so I guess you can say the website is quite accurate. Ultimately, I learned that and reinforced that what I want to do as a career is real estate. img_2842

Focus Career Survey

screen-shot-2016-11-21-at-7-51-28-pm

I did the Focus Career Self Assessment survey and it gave me a very interesting choice of questions that made me think in different ways and such. The results that came from it didnt surprise me as most of it had to do with like business and management like jobs. However for some reason psychology was thrown in the mix of results and it really got me thinking. Reading the description for it it sounded very interesting and something that I’ll keep in the back of my head. However before I start making life changing choices left and right, I’d prefer to do some more research and maybe gain some first hand experiences within these fields first.

Focus 2 helped me decide what type of accountant i want to be.  The questions that helped me rate my interests in my major made me to realize I wanted to be a CPA (Certified Public Accountant).  I really liked the wide range of jobs the site gave me upon my answers to the questions.
