Starr Career Development Workshop

I attended a Starr career development workshop explaining what Linkedin is and how to use it. The workshop lasted for an hour long. I thought to myself that the workshop was going to be boring just explaining the ins and outs of Linkedin, but I learned that Linkedin is a very important thing and could help you in job searching. Linkedin in a short and easy explanation is like a Facebook for professionals. I learned how to create a good profile. The speaker explained a feature that Linkedin has which was you can see who has viewed your profile. Some benefits that were said about Linkedin was it helps connect you with professionals, helping you create a network. Linkedin also has job postings and Linkedin will also help recommend which jobs you should apply for based on previous experience.

I was surprised by the sheer amount of people who attended the workshop. The room was pretty much full. Thinking this would just be a small workshop was all wrong.

This workshop was a great experience and sort of like a small introduction to the professional world. After this workshop and learning Linkedin is a useful resource that everybody has, I am going to use it in the future. This big thing that I liked about Linkedin is that it helps you build a network and having a big network can help you in many ways.

Academic – Museum Of Natural History

For my second blog post, I decided to go to Museum of Natural History. I wanted to go to the Museum of Natural History for a long time, but I have never went in the eighteen years I’ve been in New York.

The museum itself was really nice. It was huge and there were so many tourist it was so hard walking around the museum. When first getting into the museum you are greeted with Cullman Hall of the Universe. It was a good introduction to the museum with all these scales placed around the exhibit where you can see your weight on the other planets. After messing around in the Hall of Universe, I took advantage of the Space Show in the Hayden Planetarium. It was a good show explaining how stars are created and planets and the beginning of the universe.

What got my attention in this museum was the Milstein Family Hall of Ocean Life where the huge whale was. It just amazed me, seeing a life-size whale just hanging from the ceiling. I also got to just sit down for a while and see all the other marine life. For example a giant squid, dolphins, sea otters and many others.

The other exhibit that intrigued me was the dinosaur exhibit. I’d never thought to see a dinosaur before especially the triceratops since it is my favorite dinosaur. This exhibit was the worst to go through. There were so many people, you could barely walk through it. But my favorite exhibit was the Morgan Memorial Hall of Gems. The Hall of Gems was not crowded at all. I was able to freely move and be able to sit down and take a rest. I also got to learn how to tell the difference between Fool’s gold and real good.

I encourage everybody to go to the Museum of Natural History as it is a great experience. It also is a block away from Central Park if you want to relax at Central Park afterwards. I was not able to explore the museum fully and will be going back soon. That whale though

Student Life – Vietnamese Student Association (VSA)

For my student life activity,  I attended the Vietnamese Student Association’s DIY Summer Roll/Language workshop today.  I decided to check out VSA because after going to their first General Interest Meeting, I felt that I really clicked with some of the members and I really liked the atmosphere that was in the club. The other reason I wanted to join was because I’m half Vietnamese and I want to learn more about my culture and how to speak the language since I was never taught about it.

During the first GIM, I got to meet a lot of the e-board and a lot of new faces. I met someone named Jonathan and I got really close with him. We found out that we both went to the same high school and we just reminisced about our high school times. He was also to help me out with where to buy my textbooks so I’m really grateful for him saving me a few bucks.

I ate Summer Rolls a lot since I am half Viet, but I never really knew how to roll one. Tam who was leading both the DIY Summer Roll and Language Workshop taught to me in a really simple way. He also got to plug in the club’s YouTube Channel.

During the Language workshop, I got to learn how to order some of the popular food choices in a Vietnamese restaurant and how to do a simple greeting and say thank you. I was ecstatic to learn some of the phrases of my culture.

Overall my experience in the club was great. I really liked it and how they have language workshops where I can learn more phrases.  I plan to come back to the next VSA event.

Me and Jonathan the Historian of the club. Sorry It’s blurry.
