Freshman Seminar Fall 17 CFB

Starr Career Development Center Workshop

For this week’s blog post, I attended a workshop from the Starr Career Development Center. They were hosting a Marketing Career Expo in which I was interested in.

Although my intended major is Computer Information Systems, after taking business I have been considering on pursuing a career more related in the field. In particular, Digital Marketing was something I took time to learn more about. It combines both my passion for technology and business together.

At the workshop, I was provided with a lot intel on the major and career itself. There were many discussions on how to prepare for a career in the marketing industry and I was given a chance to talk to some professionals and recruiters in the field. I also found myself being introduced to various new companies I never heard of before. Some of the many media companies included of Group M, iCrossing, and Horizon Media. Overall, my experience was really meaningful. I was able to learn more, compare to what I search up on the internet about marketing by directly being able to talk to some of the representatives.

I think that it is really helpful of Baruch to hold such event for only undergraduate students. It really helps students in the marketing major to learn more about their future career, and for students like me to learn more about such field. I found the workshop really beneficial and will be planning on attending others in the future to gain more knowledge on preparing for my future career. Doing so, will also definitely help me to make a decision on what my major will be.

Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)

For this week’s blog post, I attended the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). This was actually the first time I ever went to MoMA even though I have lived in NYC for majority of my life. I was really excited to go since MoMA is a really well known attraction. When I arrived, it was really crowded. There were a lot of tourist as well as a large group of international students. I got to see almost every exhibit from the first floor to the sixth floor, in addition to the sculpture garden. However, I didn’t get the chance to go to the theater to watch a film.

My overall favorite exhibition was probably the fashion one, which included variety of different clothing and accessories on display from various time periods. There were different clothing brands shown such as Chanel, Versace, Dior, etc (As seen in the first image). From present to past, there were a total of 111 pieces. The vibrant colors and designs all stood out to me. I was able to take some really nice photos.

Every piece from the museum in general, was just really satisfying to look at. They were all each unique in there individual way. Some of the other memorable displays were probably “The Starry Night” painting by Vincent van Gogh, the Marilyn Monroe painting, and the giant rose in the sculpture garden.

I’m really glad I got this opportunity to finally visit MoMA especially since it was for free. Just being able to look at and learn about the art work by many of these artists show how diverse our culture really is. I would definitely go back to MoMA again, and visit other places that offer free admission with a CUNY ID. I want to take this advantage we get to learn more, like I did at MoMA.

United Chinese Language Association (UCLA)

I attended the United Chinese Language Association’s (UCLA) General Interest Meeting #2.  UCLA is a club that strives to promote and educate students of the Chinese culture. This was one of the clubs I was interested in and signed up for during the club fair on convocation day. At the meeting, I was able to meet some of the few representatives of the club, as well as other first year students. The club members introduced to us some of the events that would take place such as the Mid-Autumn (Mooncake) and Lunar Festival. I also learned that in order to verify as a UCLA member we have to attend 1 GIM, 1 Social event, and 1 Chinese Learning Program. As a whole group we split into two teams and played Google family feud and a zooming in picture game. Chinese food was also served and everyone was able to get to know each other. Attending this event in general was really meaningful. I’m glad I went not just only for the FRO assignment. My experience was really fun and it was nice being around people who have a similar background to me. Being someone who lived in the U.S. for most of my life it’s nice to be able to learn more about my culture and where I’m from. This is officially my first step in taking part of Baruch Student Life and I really hope on continuing of being an active member in this club.
