Freshman Seminar Fall 17 CFB

Starr Career Development Center Workshop

On October 19, I went to a Starr Career Development Center fair for Freshmen and Sophomores. This workshop is a way to help first and second-year students understand the recruiting process for most internships and jobs. It gave information on ways to get into early ID, pipeline, and leadership programs, many of which will lead to internships. They also gave a fifteen-minute conversation on recruiting events, networking events and the recruiting process, and an introductory resume advice.

I also received few brochures and pamphlets on career programs for first and second-year students. One of them is Peers for Careers Program, which is within T.E.A.M Baruch and was the first special program within the STARR Career Development Center. This program helps college students, staff, and alumni with career planning and exploration, resume writing, job search, interviewing, cover letters, and much more. This seems like a program I would join and most definitely benefit from. This program will give me valuable skills to land a successful internship with my intended major.

Academic – The Museum of Modern Art

One of the great aspects of attending a CUNY College is that you have access to go to many museums in New York City for free. This week I went to the Museum of Modern Art because it showcases some of the most diverse art in the contemporary world.

The Museum of Modern Art has a sense of calmness and relaxation that’s feel as if you’re in a whole new world. Although it was crowded, I barely noticed the people around me because the art captured all my attention. The museum showcased some artwork I wouldn’t have thought they would even consider displaying. For instances, MoMA has a fashion exhibit, which presents 111 past clothing and accessories that have had a powerful impact during the 20th and 21st centuries and that have made an impact in fashion today. I did not think MoMA would create an exhibit about fashion let alone clothing and accessories that were so trendy and important to pop-culture. My favorite was the clothing of Saree because it was a representation of my culture and I like how they contributed to the exhibit full of predominantly American fashion style. They even had a video showing people how to wear a Saree. Many people were surprised by the process of wearing a Saree, and one woman even said, “It must take hours to put it on!”

The Museum of Modern Art showcased some of the most diverse artists that have shaped the way we view art today. They all tell fascinating stories and displays their art with such raw and captivating emotion. One, for example, was Untitled (Chair) by Louise Bourgeois, which was a sculpture representing the artist’s feelings of isolation and loneliness she experienced in her family life. This sculpture captured my attention at first because of how small it was and how unique it was. It was a sculpture of mother and child, connected by the umbilical cord. I felt as if I can almost feel the emotions of the artist.

I would definitely go to the MoMA again because of its uncommon representation of art.

Finance & Economics Society

Going to Financial & Economics Society at Baruch, felt like the first day of college all over again—nerves of meeting new people, the anxiety of having a difficult course/program, and not liking the course. But I kept my nerves at bay because I already experienced the first day of college so I can handle this.

The mission statement for Financial & Economics Society is “to provide members with the knowledge, mentality, and experience necessary to succeed in their respective industries.”, and immediately I believed in their mission statement because the leaders of the club presented all the steps and programs that will help students to achieve success in their professional careers. Financial & Economics Society, FES for short, is the oldest Finance club on campus and was traded by a merger of the Finance Society and the Economic Society. They like to foster an environment that is open, as well as provide a learning experience that will help us to understand different ways to gain networking opportunities, gain knowledge on different finance techniques, and gain a support system that will help us succeed in a professional environment. After learning all of this, I realized how important this club is because it will give me experience and knowledge in the business world, which I might not get in a regular class setting. I will also get to meet new people I don’t have classes with and meet people from different levels.

After the leaders presented, we, all one hundred of us, broke into teams to do the Marshmallow Challenge, which was to create the highest tower with spaghetti and with a marshmallow on the top. The point of this challenge is to work in groups and devise a plan to accomplish a task together. Working in teams is essential in any field and this was a great way to work on our teamwork skills, as well as meet new people.

When the first Financial & Economics Society event ended, I made the decision to be fully committed to this club and to go to every event and workshop because I know it will benefit me in the long run. It will help me improve and gain new skills such as communication skills, leadership skills, time management skill, etc., which are all necessary for any situation, not just in a professional environment.
